Quote courtesy of the Big Ten

COACH LEGETTE-JACK: We wanted

that game so bad. We really, really wanted to win

that game. I thought we had a great game plan. I

thought we had the right karma. I just thought that

we had the right thought process as far as what we

were going to do to offset their tenacious defense.

We got opening shots. Just the stars

wasn't lined up. It didn't seem to fall in our court.

I'll tell you what, it's 11 teams in this conference.

The locker room that I'm very proud to be in is

Indiana women's basketball room, because at the

end of the day as a coach you really have to win.

You really want the win.

But more important than that, being a

mother and a wife, I really want to grow young

women. And I have some character kids on my

team. I have some unbelievable students on my

team.

I have people on my team that's going to

be CFOs and CEOs of organizations. They're

going to be working for one of you guys. You're

going to be working for one of them, I should say,

one day soon because they are really honorable

young women.

At the end of the day basketball has to

prevail and we have to continue to grow our

basketball side of it. And at the end of the day I'm

just really grateful that my coaches go out and

bring in some unbelievable student-athletes. We'll

get better.

We'll continue to work hard for our Hoosier

Nation. The season seems to be up and down.

They seem to be all about the teaching and the

moments and the learning. But we'll keep getting

better. We're not going anywhere until we add to

those five championships that our men put up

there in that beautiful hall.

Our goals are big, our dreams are high.

We're going to go out there and attain them.

Day Two action begins tomorrow when the day opens with Michigan State facing Michigan followed by Iowa-Penn State.
The night action starts at 6 when the Ohio State takes the floor against Illinois and the Purdue Lady Boilers facing Wisconsin in the nite cap.

Jantel Lavender

possession, the foul at 1.9, Jantel's turn. How

did you see it? Good call? What did you

think?

COACH FOSTER: You know, yeah,

because you've got to allow the player the

opportunity to get the shot off. And the contact

appeared to be significant. But I'm not going to

evaluate that until I look at the tape. There's

several things I would like to see on the tape. It

was just interesting. But it's that time of year.

And I thought in the first half we were not

mature in how we were dealing with that, and we

were complaining. And it's something that's not

even in your control. And you gotta get that out of

your head. And you gotta grind.

And that's what I like best about us in the

second half. We put that aside. We took what was

turning into an excuse and made it disappear.

Q. On that last play, Coach, was it

designed to go to Jantel all along or did you

give Samantha the option to take that shot?

COACH FOSTER: No, it was going into

Lavender. Now, if there was someone around her,

like three people and we couldn't get it, obviously

we're going to have to make a decision. But I

didn't have the stat sheet at the time. But I had a

pretty good idea that her numbers were significant.

And they were struggling to guard her.

So, yeah, if you've got a First Team

All-American, you throw them the ball. If you're

lucid.

 Jason Werner Granted 6th year

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue linebacker Jason Werner has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA and will play for the Boilermakers in 2010.

Since arriving at Purdue, Werner has been healthy for only three seasons: 2005, 2007 and 2009. He missed both the 2006 and 2008 seasons with a recurring back injury.

“It feels great to finally get the word, and I’m extremely excited to be back,” said Werner, a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree who earned his bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership and supervision in August of 2009 and currently is working toward a graduate degree. “I have been working out this whole time without knowing whether I would get the chance to play again, and now that the decision has been made I can really get back at it. I’m looking forward to playing with my teammates again and for our coaches.”

Werner appeared in six games as a reserve and on special teams in 2005 and in all 13 games as a backup in 2007 before starting all 12 games at strongside linebacker in 2009. Last season, the team co-captain ranked third on the Boilermakers with 77 tackles (61 solo, 16 assists), including 14.5 for loss and 4.5 sacks, with two pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one interception. His average of 1.21 tackles for loss per game ranked eighth in the Big Ten. Werner had a career-high 13 tackles vs. Toledo on Sept. 5. He had 3.0 tackles for loss at Oregon on Sept. 12 and vs. Ohio State on Oct. 17.

“This is great news for Jason, our football family and all of Boilermaker Nation,” head coach Danny Hope said. “He’s a heck of a player who did a great job last season and can be even better this year. He can be one of the top players at his position in our league. Getting him back also helps us from a leadership standpoint because we don’t have a very big senior class, and he’s a great leader and teammate. All the way around, it’s exciting to have Jason back.”

In 31 career games, the 6-foot-4, 221-pound Werner, from Greenwood, Ind., has totaled 105 tackles (82 solo, 23 assists), including 16.5 for loss and 5.5 sacks, with three pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He was named Indiana Mr. Football as a senior at Roncalli High School and came to Purdue as a safety before moving to linebacker during the 2006 spring season.

Werner is the second Boilermaker to be granted a sixth year in as many years, following defensive back Torri Williams.
