Purdue Slated For Primetime Game At Northwestern

The Big Ten Conference and its television partners today announced the 2010 primetime football schedule, and Purdue has one game slated to be played under the lights.
The Boilermakers' game at Northwestern on Oct. 9 will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET (6:30 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.) and be televised by the Big Ten Network. It is Purdue's Big Ten opening game.
The game will be played almost 75 years to the day of the first-ever night game in Big Ten history. Purdue defeated Northwestern 7-0 in Evanston on Oct. 5, 1935. The lone touchdown came on a 54-yard punt return by sophomore halfback Tom McGannon, who less than a year later died tragically from severe burns suffered when a water heater exploded in a shower room at the Boilermakers' training facility at Ross Camp - about 10 miles west of campus.
Purdue will not play any additional night games in 2010.
ESPN/ABC will televise six games involving Big Ten teams in primetime, as will the Big Ten Network.
Purdue and Northwestern have not met in a night game since that inaugural game under the lights.
Overall, Purdue has played in 35 night games, defined as starting after 6 p.m. local time, with a 15-20 record.

The Purdue Board of Trustees today approved financing for construction of a new baseball stadium, located at Cherry Lane and McCormick Road, and improvements to the adjacent Varsity Soccer Complex. The $21 million project is part of the Mackey Complex master plan that was approved in May 2007.

Lambert Field, which is located on Stadium Avenue and has been the home of Purdue baseball since 1965, will be razed to make room for additional parking for the planned Student Fitness and Wellness Center, an expansion and renovation to the current Recreational Sports Center.

"When we were given the go-ahead to begin the Mackey project in 2007, part of the scope was to investigate the `Northwest Site' (the area where the Varsity Soccer Complex, Schwartz Tennis Center, Varsity Cross Country Course and Grand Prix race track currently reside)," athletics director Morgan Burke said. "We have talked for several years about a new baseball stadium and, with more parking space needed for the new Student Fitness and Wellness Center, the timing couldn't be better. The soccer complex as it stands now is rather bare bones and needs some upgrades to make it a more contemporary facility. Both of these projects will help us in our continued pursuit of joining the `25/85 Club.'"

The new baseball stadium will be located west of the Varsity Soccer Complex and is expected to be completed in time for the 2012 season. The facility will be built in traditional Purdue style with brick and masonry exterior facades and a concrete spectator area with a combination of bench and chairback seats. Seating capacity will be 1,500, with the ability to add bleachers to host postseason events. A new press box will include media seating, radio and television announce booths, and a game-day operations area. Television-quality lights will allow for night games to be televised.

The Boilermakers' home dugout will be located along the third-base line and adjacent to a new clubhouse that will feature a locker room, lounge, team meeting area and athletic training treatment area. The clubhouse will be attached to an enclosed and heated training facility that will allow for offseason batting and pitching workouts.

Both the home and visiting dugouts will be heated, and both teams will have dedicated bullpens and batting cages.

"We are grateful that the board has given its approval to move forward with the new baseball facility," head coach Doug Schreiber said. "The baseball program is very excited about becoming part of the cornerstone of the `Northwest Site" along with women's soccer and the tennis teams.

"Lambert Field has been a great home for us over the years, but, based on plans and renderings that we have been working on, I firmly believe that this new facility will be one that will make our university, our tremendous fans and the entire community very proud."

The other part of the northwest site project is improvements to team and fan amenities that currently do not exist at the Varsity Soccer Complex, which was completed in 1999 and features two playing fields.

A centrally located press box and team building will house the home team locker room, lounge, meeting area and athletic training facility, as well as the visiting team meeting room, concessions and public restrooms. A new grandstand will be erected on the west side of the primary game field.

The second-level press area will have room for media, radio and television announcers, as well as game-day staff.

A television-quality lighting system also will be installed. Plans are for all soccer complex improvements to be completed for the 2012 season.

"Everyone involved with the women's soccer program is appreciative of the university's support for this project and ecstatic about the possibilities that the construction will provide our student-athletes on a daily basis," head coach Robert Klatte said. "These improvements will create an environment that will facilitate their growth and development and give the program a home, in essence, located in our playing and practicing facility. The addition of a new grandstand with concession and restroom facilities will greatly enhance the fan experience."

The baseball and soccer venues will be connected by a decorative landscaped corridor featuring native plantings and attractive hardscape features that allow pedestrian travel to and from the venues and new parking areas. The development of infrastructure (access roads and parking) will enable circulation among all the athletics facilities as well as the new Grand Prix race track.

Cost for the construction and renovation increased from the previously approved $15 million primarily due to significant costs in the development of infrastructure and other site-related issues, as well as changes in design as the projects became more well defined.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, which is self-supporting and receives no tax dollars or university funding, is paying for the projects with income generated through Big Ten Conference television agreements, gifts and other department funds. Of the $121 million required for the Mackey Arena renovation and expansion and the baseball and soccer projects, $32 million is being generated through fund-raising. In essence, for every $1 gift, the athletics department is contributing $3 from conference television agreements and other department funds.

Thus far, $28.5 million has been raised. Former baseball student-athletes and coaches have contributed $1 million to the baseball stadium project.

Kyle Adams Nominated For Good Works Team

NORTHBROOK, Ill. - Purdue senior team captain Kyle Adams has been recognized by the Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) as one of the 112 student-athletes nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®. It is the most ever in the 19-year history of the award.

Adams, who is enters his final season in the Old Gold and Black with 43 career receptions for 416 yards and three touchdowns, has been noted for his summer trips to assist with relief and aid efforts in Haiti over the past three years.

In the areas of giving back and volunteerism, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® represents the "best of the best" among more than 50,000 student-athletes participating in the sport at all four-year institutions. The total eclipses the 106 nominees achieved last season, demonstrating the continued growth of a platform that is widely recognized as the most prestigious community service award in college football.

While glory and praise may be traditionally reserved for the most athletically skilled college football players on the field, it is the student-athletes committed to serving others who make the most important impact off the field. The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® exists to tell their stories and acknowledge their impact beyond the game.

"In the third year of our partnership with the AFCA, Allstate, our employees and our agents continue to be inspired by the stories of class and character displayed by these young men," said Guy Hill, vice president of sales and service for Allstate, who also serves on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel. "We applaud the commitment of these 112 student-athletes to positively impact their communities with innovation, creativity and passion that reflects so well on their sport, and their respective institutions."

This year's class of nominations includes student-athletes with a wide range of accomplishments, including developing programs to support Haitian relief efforts, working with rural and minority students to help them reach their goal of attending medical school, and organizing a campus fundraiser to incentivize students to shave their heads to raise money for pediatric cancer research.

From the nominees submitted by sports information directors on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members is responsible for selecting two 11-player Good Works Teams® - one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA - to be announced in September. College Football Hall of Fame member and ESPN broadcaster Lou Holtz is returning for a third year to serve as spokesperson for the program and raise awareness for the stories of the nominees and team members.

"For the third straight year, the AFCA is pleased to partner with Allstate in highlighting football student-athletes who have achieved outstanding success, both on and off the football," said Grant Teaff, AFCA Executive Director. "From the record total of nominees that were submitted from colleges and universities around the country, it is apparent that collegiate football is producing some of the best and brightest that our country has to offer."

ESPN.com will launch a customized Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® web site featuring profiles and images of the final 22 award recipients, as well as unique and interactive content for college football fans. For the first time in the program's history, fans will be able to vote for a Team Captain on ESPN.com.

The 2010 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel includes: former Good Works Team® members Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998 teams), Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002 team), Mewelde Moore (Tulane, 2003 team), Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001 team), Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team); media members Lou Holtz (ESPN), Pat Forde (ESPN.com), Tom O'Toole (USA Today), Gary Shelton (St. Petersburg Times), Blair Kerkhoff (Kansas City Star); current AFCA President and Mount Union College Head Coach Larry Kehres; 1996 AFCA President Fisher DeBerry, former head coach at the United States Air Force Academy; and Allstate Vice President, Guy Hill.

With the start of training camp less than one month away, Purdue head football coach Danny Hope announced today that Robert Marve will be the Boilermakers’ No. 1 quarterback heading into practice.

Marve, a junior, transferred to Purdue from Miami (Fla.) in May of 2009 and sat out last season. He and sophomore Caleb TerBush shared the No. 1 quarterback spot throughout practice this past spring.

“We like everything about Robert – his ability to throw the football, run with the football and lead our team from the quarterback position – and we want him to begin practice with the mindset that he is the guy,” Hope said. “Knowing Robert and his competitiveness, he will not take this decision for granted and, if anything, it will make him more determined than ever to solidify the starting position.”

Former Purdue offensive guard Kelly Kitchel has been hired by Purdue Sports Properties as its football radio sideline reporter, completing the announce crew for the 2010 season.

In April, Tim Newton was selected to replace the retired Joe McConnell as play-by-play announcer, and Rob Blackman was moved from the sideline to Newton's previous position of pregame, halftime and postgame host, as well as producer.

Former Boilermaker center Pete Quinn returns as color commentator.

Kitchel played for Purdue from 1998 to 2002 and was a member of five bowl teams: 1998 Alamo, 2000 Outback, 2001 Rose, 2001 Sun and 2002 Sun. After redshirting in 1998, he appeared in 35 games, including five starts at right guard during the 2001 season. His position coach from 1998 to 2001 was current head coach Danny Hope. Kitchel majored in organizational leadership and supervision and was a member of the Dean's List.

Kitchel currently works as regional manager for Junior Achievement of Northern Indiana.

From 2007 to 2010, Kitchel worked for WASK Radio Group as one of the "Lafayette Sports Guys." He also wrote a weekly column for Gold&Black.com. Kitchel was a varsity assistant football coach for Lafayette Jefferson High School from 2003 to 2009.

Kitchel and his wife, Brooke, have three children: twins Cooper and Carson and Cade.

Purdue Sports Properties (PSP), a property of Learfield Sports, manages the Boilermakers' multimedia rights and statewide radio network. Learfield Sports manages the multimedia rights to more than 50 collegiate institutions and associations.

The Big Ten Conference today announced start times for all Homecoming games for the 2010 football season.

Purdue’s Homecoming game against Minnesota on Oct. 16 will kick off at noon ET. That game also will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 2001 Rose Bowl team, and this year’s Boilermakers will wear throwback uniforms similar to the ones worn against Washington on New Year’s Day 2001.

Purdue has played host to the Golden Gophers eight times previously on Homecoming, posting a 6-2 record. One of the wins was a 38-24 victory during the Rose Bowl season in which Drew Brees set the Purdue career record for touchdown passes and Big Ten career marks for passing attempts and completions. In the game, Brees completed 33 of 49 passes for 409 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 88 yards on 12 carries with a touchdown. He was honored as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.

The Boilermakers will be the Homecoming opponent for Ohio State on Oct. 23 in Columbus, and that game also will kick off at noon ET.

Television plans will be announced 12 days or six days prior to the games.

Kickoff times for the Boilermakers’ first two home games – Sept. 11 vs. Western Illinois and Sept. 18 vs. Ball State – are expected to be announced around July 1.
