Iowa and Michigan State Earn Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors

Michigan State’s Cassius Winston named Player of the Week;

Iowa’s Joe Wieskamp earns Freshman of the Week

 

Player of the Week

Cassius Winston, Michigan State
G – Jr. – 6-1 – Detroit, Mich. – University of Detroit Jesuit High School – Major: Advertising Management

  • Scored a career-high 29 points, handed out six assists and grabbed three rebounds in No. 6/6 Michigan State’s win at Nebraska
  • Shot 9-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from 3-point range and 8-of-9 from the foul line as Michigan State extended its school record 19-game conference game win streak
  • Scored nine of Michigan State’s last 11 points in the road victory, which ended Nebraska’s 20-game homecourt win streak
  • Became the 51st individual in Michigan State history to surpass 1,000 career points in the victory and now has 1,006 in 88 career games
  • Leads Big Ten in assists per game (7.3), which is fourth in the nation
  • Earns the third Big Ten Player of the Week honor of his career and this season

Freshman of the Week

Joe Wieskamp, Iowa

G – 6-6 – Muscatine, Iowa. – Muscatine High School – Major: Business

  • Averaged 17 points and six rebounds in a pair of Iowa victories over Penn State and Illinois
  • Shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor including 6-of-6 from 3-point range in a victory over the Fighting Illini
  • His 6-of-6 day on 3-pointers equaled an Iowa school record for most made 3-pointers without a miss previously accomplished by Jim Bartels in 1995 and Jeff Horner in 2004
  • Helped Iowa to a school record for team field goal percentage (68.0 percent) with his 8-of-8 performance from the floor
  • Scored all 10 of his points in the second half of Iowa’s comeback victory at Penn State
  • Earns his first Freshman of the Week honor

Iowa and Michigan Earn Weekly Women’s Basketball Awards

Hawkeyes’ Megan Gustafson and Wolverines’ Naz Hillmon are this week’s honorees

 

Player of the Week

Megan Gustafson, Iowa

F/C – Sr. – Port Wing, Wis. – South Shore – Major: Business & Finance

• Averaged 27.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game with a .740 field goal percentage and three double-doubles last week, helping No. 22/18 Iowa to three Big Ten victories

• Scored 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Hawkeyes’ win at No. 23/25 Minnesota on Jan. 14

• Capped her week with her NCAA-leading 17th double-double (27 points/12 rebounds), including her first career three-pointer, in Sunday’s victory at Illinois

• An Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2017-18

• Earns her 18th career Big Ten Player of the Week award, moving past Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante (17 from 2001-04) for second place all-time and one behind Lavender (19 from 2008-11) for the most in conference history … also earns her eighth honor of the season, one shy of her own record set last year

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll

Brianna Fraser, Sr., F, MD: Came off the bench to average 17.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game with a .545 field goal percentage in a 1-1 week for No. 9/9 Maryland

Stasha Carey, Sr., F, RU: Registered 20.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game last week, including a career-high 30 points on Sunday against Michigan State, to pace No. 20/23 Rutgers to a pair of Big Ten wins and a school-record 7-0 start in conference play

 

Freshman of the Week

Naz Hillmon, Michigan

F – Cleveland, Ohio – Gilmour Academy – Major: Undecided

• Averaged 18.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game with a .708 field goal percentage last week as Michigan split Big Ten matchups at Iowa (loss) and at home against Ohio State (win)

• Highlight of her week was 20 points (on 9-of-12 shooting) and eight rebounds in Sunday’s comeback victory over OSU, including the game-winning basket from an offensive rebound with 13 seconds remaining

• Also registered 16 points and six rebounds on Jan. 17 at Iowa

• Collects her third Freshman of the Week award
