Iowa and Nebraska Earn Weekly Women’s Basketball Awards

Iowa’s Megan Gustafson and Nebraska’s Kate Cain are this week’s honorees

 

Player of the Week

Megan Gustafson, Iowa

F/C – Jr. – Port Wing, Wis. – South Shore

• Recorded her NCAA-leading 12th double-double of the season with 27 points and 12 rebounds in the Hawkeyes’ win over in-state foe Drake on Dec. 21

• Connected on 11-of-17 shots from the field while adding four blocks and two steals

• Helped Iowa to a 12-1 non-conference record, matching its best start since a similar 12-1 record in 2010-11

• Earns her fifth career Player of the Week honor and fourth of the season

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll

Eleanna Christinaki, Jr., G/F, MD: Scored a career-high 32 points in her debut in a Maryland uniform, making 12-of-20 shots, including 6-of-13 three-pointers in the Terrapins’ win at Coppin State on Dec. 20

Kenisha Bell, Jr., G, MINN: Registered her second 30-point game of the season with a game-high 30 points and nine assists (without a turnover) in Minnesota’s victory over UC Riverside on Dec. 22

Ae’Rianna Harris, So., F, PUR: Named MVP of the Basketball Travelers, Inc., Invitational, averaging 16.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game with two double-doubles and a .583 field-goal percentage in her final two games against UT Martin and Saint Mary’s (Calif.), leading Purdue to the tournament title

 

Freshman of the Week

Kate Cain, Nebraska

C – Middletown, N.Y. – Pine Bush

• Averaged 13.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 7.0 blocks per game with a .545 field-goal percentage as Nebraska split matchups with Florida Atlantic and Washington State last week

• Posted the third triple-double in school history (first involving blocked shots) with career highs of 22 points, 14 rebounds and a school-record 11 blocks in the win over FAU on Dec. 19

• Paced Nebraska to a 9-4 non-conference record, two more wins than the Huskers registered all of last season

• Earns her fourth career Freshman of the Week honor

Spartans’ Miles Bridges earns Player of the Week award; Fighting Illini’s Trent Frazier named Freshman of the Week

 

Player of the Week

Miles Bridges, Michigan State

G/F – So. – 6-7 – Flint, Mich. – Huntington Prep

  • Averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in two wins last week
  • Tied a career high with 33 points in a 107-62 win vs. Houston Baptist and added six rebounds and five assists
  • Nearly topped his single-game season high for points (21) in the first half vs. Houston Baptist with 20 points
  • Scored 17 points and added nine rebounds in a 102-60 victory vs. Long Beach State
  • Earns his first career Big Ten Player of the Week honor
  • Last Michigan State Player of the Week: Nick Ward (Feb. 27, 2017)

Freshman of the Week

Trent Frazier, Illinois

G – 6-1 – Wellington, Fla. – Wellington

  • Scored a career-high 22 points, had one rebound, one assist and one block in a 70-64 win vs. Missouri in St. Louis, Mo.
  • Helped lead Illinois to a fifth-straight win in the annual Braggin’ Rights game by scoring the team’s final eight points
  • Went 10-of-11 from the free throw line, setting a new career high, and made four straight free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win
  • Scored in double figures for the fourth consecutive game and has averaged 17.8 points per game during the stretch
  • Earns his first career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor
