Week-5 IBCA/Subway Player of the Week Honorees Post 30-Point Performances, Triple-Doubles

With the girls’ season nearing the midway point, and the boys’ season now two weeks in, players are starting to round out their games and show much more consistency. Big performances have seemingly become the norm this year, with last week being no different.

Garrett Senior Jayden Broadnax, Northwestern Senior Tayson Parker, New Albany Sophomore Tucker Biven, Oregon-Davis Junior Mercedes Rhodes, Anderson Junior Tyra Ford, and Trinity Lutheran Freshman Bailey Tabeling were selected as recipients for the week of Dec. 2-Dec.7 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Broadnax is the boys’ winner and Rhodes is the girls’ winner for District-1. Parker and Ford are the recipients of the District-2 boys’ and girls’ awards, respectively. Biven is the boys’ honoree and Tabeling is the girls’ honoree for District-3.

Last Tuesday, Broadnax began with a modest start to the week, posting 21 points and grabbing nine rebounds, but it wasn’t enough as Garrett fell to Woodlan. In the game, he also contributed three assists and a pair of steals. The 6-5 Senior wing was sure to bounce back though.

Friday night he responded with a career performance, pouring in 39 points on his 18 made field goals, plus he was a steady 3-6 from 3-point range. Additionally, Jayden pulled down an impressive 16 rebounds, he handed out five assists, and he collected five steals, though the Railroaders fell once again in overtime to Lakewood Park Christian.

Also in District-1, Mercedes Rhodes had herself a strong week. Wednesday, Oregon-Davis hosted the 2019 Class A State Champion Marquette Catholic Blazers, handing them a 74-27 loss. Rhodes was the key catalyst for the Bobcats, scoring 34 points, dishing out four assists, and making four thefts in the victory. She was an efficient 12-17 from the field (6-9 from 3-point range), and during the game she surpassed the 1000-point mark for her career.

The very next night, Oregon-Davis traveled to West Central, where the 5-8 wing added another 30 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and six steals to her season totals. She again shot it well, going 11-18 from the field and 5-8 from 3-point range. Rhodes has helped the Bobcats to a 7-1 start this season.

Northwestern Senior Tayson Parker continues to shine for the Tigers, and he had a pair of nice outings last weekend. Friday night, the 6-1 combo guard helped Northwestern take down conference rival Western 57-44 behind 31 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, and a pair of assists.

The very next night, Parker helped the Tigers knock off a tough Mississinewa squad 55-51. In that game, Parker added 24 points, 13 rebounds, three steals, and an assist. The talented Senior has committed to play at Indiana Wesleyan University next season.

Junior Tyra Ford is the girls’ winner in District-2, and she came up big for the Anderson Indians in a pair of conference matchups last week. Tuesday evening, Ford posted a triple-double in a 61-56 overtime win against the Marion Giants. She scored 21 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and collected 10 steals in the effort. She also handed out four assists and blocked a pair of shots.

The 5-8 wing plays much bigger than she is, and in a Saturday matchup against IBCA No. 12 West Lafayette Harrison, the Junior scored 29 big points, but the Indians fell 54-50 in a tight one throughout. In the effort, Ford also had five rebounds, a pair of assists, six steals, and two blocked shots. She is very close to the 1000-point mark and the 500-rebound mark already.

Saturday, in just his second game of the season, New Albany’s Tucker Biven stepped up big in a 68-45 win over Evansville Harrison. The 6-2 Sophomore was 11-17 from the field, 4-7 from 3-point range, and 6-8 from the free throw line, en route to 32 points for the game. Biven also contributed in other ways, as he added five rebounds, four assists, and six steals. It was New Albany’s only game of the week.

For the second time this season, a Freshman has won the weekly award. This time it’s Trinity Lutheran’s Bailey Tabeling in District-3. Tabeling had a busy week with three games on the slate. Last Tuesday her Cougars took on Indianapolis Lutheran, winning easily 64-14. In the contest, she was 4-8 from 3-point range and contributed 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in limited minutes.

Thursday night, Tabeling and Trinity Lutheran traveled to Edinburgh, handing them only their second loss of the season, 71-57. In this outing, the 5-8 guard was magnificent, pouring in a game high 36 points due to a 15-19 performance at the free throw line, while also grabbing 13 key rebounds. Throw an assist and three steals in there as well.

Finally, on Saturday they headed to always competitive Providence, where the Cougars once again won 55-35. Tabeling was good once again, scoring 18 points, grabbing five rebounds, handing out four assists, and collecting two steals. She has been key to Trinity Lutheran’s 6-1 start, as she is leading them in scoring so far this season.

This is the 12th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program, and the eighth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its eighth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh”.

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Girls State Finals. Boys winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Boys State Finals.
