Evans, Langford headline IBCA Players of the Week

High-scoring duo joined by Young, James, Webster, Vauters and Hatton as honorees

 

Gary West senior Dana Evans averaged 40.7 points over three games and New Albany junior Romeo Langford averaged 39.0 points in two victories, and the high-scoring duo headlines the recipients in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.

Evans and Langford are joined by Fort Wayne Wayne sophomore Craig Young, Pike senior Isiah James, Seton Catholic senior Billie Webster, Riverton Parke senior Tayler Vauters and North Harrison sophomore Lilly Hatton as honorees for the week of Jan. 9-14 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Young and Evans are respective boys’ and girls’ winners for District 1. James and Webster shared boys’ accolades in District 2, while Vauters is the girls’ District 2 winner. Langford and Hatton picked up boys’ and girls’ awards for District 3.

The 5-7 Evans – who has been chosen to the 2017 McDonald’s All-American Game – opened her week with 53 points, six rebounds, nine rebounds and five steals in an 86-51 victory over Lowell. She followed with 24 points, five rebounds, four assists, three assists in a 69-38 loss to Lake Central. The Louisville recruit then tallied 45 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and nine steals in a 67-63 decision over Chicago Simeon as the Cougars moved to 13-5. Over the three games, Evans was 46-of-91 from the field, 9-of-25 on 3-pointers and 25-of-31 on free throws.

Vauters netted 36 points with 12 rebounds and three steals as the Riverton Parke girls improved to 16-3 with a 57-53 triumph over South Putnam in its only game of the week. Her rebounds pushed her career total to 592, a school all-time record. The 5-6 guard converted 11-of-20 shots, 1-of-5 3-pointers, and 13-of-16 free throws in the game.

The 6-1 Hatton averaged 26.0 points and 11.7 rebounds in three victories for the North Harrison girls (18-1). Hatton provided 16 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks in a 77-35 victory over Providence. She followed with a triple-double of 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks as the Lady Cats topped Austin 60-32. Hatton then scored a school-record 48 points with nine rebounds and six blocks in a 105-20 rout of Clarksville. In her 48-point outing, she converted 19-of-25 shots, 1-of-1 3-pointers and 9-of-11 free throws.

Langford led the New Albany boys (11-2) to two overwhelming victories. First, the 6-5 wing scored 43 points with five rebounds, four assists, two steals and three blocks as the Bulldogs blasted Madison 103-50. Langford followed with 35 points, eight rebounds, five assists, three steals and five blocks in a 97-40 thrashing of Scottsburg. Over both games, Langford was 32-of-42 from the field, 9-of-17 on 3-pointers and 5-of-7 on free throws.

The 6-5 Young averaged 27.0 points and 11.0 rebounds for the Fort Wayne Wayne boys (5-7). Young tallied 12 points, 10 rebounds and two steals as the Generals edged Fort Wayne Dwenger 50-49. He then erupted for 42 points with 12 rebounds and two steals in a 70-69 double-overtime setback to South Bend Washington. Young was 17-of-25 from the field, 1-of-3 on 3s and 7-of-10 on free throws in his 42-point effort.

James helped the Pike boys to four victories (12-3) and a third consecutive Marion County Tournament championship. The 6-6 forward opened with 16 points and eight rebounds in an 86-39 victory over Indianapolis Lutheran. He followed with 27 points and 11 rebounds in a 66-62 come-from-behind overtime win over Park Tudor. James netted 17 points and eight rebounds in a 48-41 semifinal triumph over Roncalli. He totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Red Devils stunned then-Class 4A No. 1 North Central 71-64 in the title game. Over the four games, James was 26-of-38 on field goals, 2-of-4 on 3-pointers and 21-of-30 on free throws.

The 6-3 Webster averaged 37.0 points and 10.0 rebounds as the Seton Hall boys (7-9) picked up three victories. Webster poured in 41 points with 10 rebounds in a 73-59 decision over Union (Modoc). He followed with 26 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two steals as the Cardinals edged Liberty Christian 66-63. Webster then tallied 34 points with 10 rebounds, six assists and four steals in a 76-64 victory over National Trail (Ohio). In the three games, Webster was 41-of-63 from the field, 8-of-11 on 3-pointers and 11-of-18 on free throws.

This is the ninth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the fifth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its sixth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 25. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 25.
