Record setters highlight IBCA/Subway Players of the Week
Montgomery, Tabor and Waggoner set school single-game marks during week of Jan. 22-27
Southridge freshman Colson Montgomery, New Castle junior Cameron Tabor and Vincennes Rivet junior Grace Waggoner each set school single-game scoring records, and that trio leads the honorees in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Montgomery is joined by Marquette Catholic junior Colin Kenney and Tindley senior Eric Hunter as boys’ winners for the week of Jan. 22-27. The girls’ honorees are Tabor, Waggoner and DeKalb senior Leigha Brown.
Kenney and Brown are honorees for District 1. Hunter and Tabor are winners for District 2. Montgomery and Waggoner are recipients in District 3.
The 6-4 Montgomery averaged 30.0 points, including a school-record 39 points against Perry Central, in leading the Southridge boys (7-8) to a 1-1 week. He began his week with 39 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in a 77-60 victory, breaking the Raiders’ mark of 38 points set by Danny O’Brien in 1974. Montgomery provided 21 points, five rebounds and two assists in a 69-54 loss to Forest Park. For both games, Montgomery hit 21-of-46 field goals, 4-of-13 field goals and 14-of-17 free throws.
Kenney averaged 26.0 points over three games for the Marquette Catholic boys (7-12) and became the program’s first player to surpass 1,000 career points. The 6-1 junior scored 31 points with five rebounds, one assist and three steals in a 67-66 setback to Crete-Monee, Ill. Kenney scored 31 points a second time with five rebounds, four assists and five steals in an 81-68 victory over Illiana Christian. He then totaled 16 points, four rebounds and three assists as the Blazers topped Winamac 67-44. For the week, Kenney was 29-of-50 from the field, 11-of-20 on 3-pointers and 9-of-10 from the line. He completed his week with 1,039 career points.
The 6-3 Hunter averaged 35.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in leading the Tindley boys (14-5) to a pair of triumphs. The Purdue recruit opened with 43 points, six rebounds, two assists and three steals in an 84-64 victory over Indianapolis Lighthouse South. He then tallied 27 points with five rebounds, three assists and three steals in a 60-51 decision over Heritage Christian. Hunter converted 22-of-36 shots, 8-of-15 3-pointers and 18-of-21 free throws over both games.
Tabor poured in a school-record 45 points to lead the New Castle girls (9-13) to an 86-66 victory over Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in her only game of the week. The 5-9 guard added four rebounds, seven assists and three blocked shots while eclipsing the old mark of 44 points that she set last season. Tabor went 16-of-21 from the field, including 6-of-8 from long distance, plus 7-of-8 from the line for her big game.
The 6-0 Waggoner averaged 32.0 points, including a school-record 43 points, in two victories for the Rivet girls (21-2). Waggoner erupted for the record outburst – breaking the old standard of 42 set by Kelly Lane in 1983 – plus seven rebounds and seven steals in a 63-36 decision over Lawrenceville, Ill. She followed with 21 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and four blocks as the Patriots posted a 64-22 victory over Northeast Dubois. Waggoner sank 13-of-21 field goals, 5-of-9 3-pointers and 12-of-16 in the record-setting game. She was 22-of-41, 6-of-13 and 14-18 over both games.
Brown averaged 31.5 points and 13.0 rebounds with a triple-double in one game for the DeKalb girls (11-11). The 6-2 wing produced 24 points with 16 rebounds and five assists in a 51-40 victory over Fort Wayne Snider. The University of Nebraska signee broke loose for 39 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Barons beat Huntington North 74-68. Over the two games, Brown sank 18-of-41 field goals, 4-of-10 3-pointers and 23-of-24 free throws.
This is the 10th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the sixth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls’ winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 24. Boys’ winners will be chosen starting in three weeks and through the week following March 24.
