Rebounding duo paces IBCA/Subway Players of the Week
Sroufe and Mulloy joined by Etchison, Tucker, Clingler, Jones, Boesing and Stogsdill as honorees
Whitko’s Spencer Sroufe and Carmel John Michael Mulloy each collected 21 rebounds in a game, and the senior duo headlines the recipients in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Sroufe and Mulloy are joined by Hamilton Heights sophomore Gus Etchison, Springs Valley senior Christian Tucker, Caston sophomore Jordan Clingler, Western Boone senior Madison Jones, Providence junior Natalie Boesing and Brown County junior Allison Stogsdill as honorees for the week of Jan. 7-12 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Sroufe is the boys’ winner and Clingler is the girls’ winner for District 1. Mulloy and Etchison shared the boys’ honor and Jones collected girls’ laurels for District 2. Tucker received boys’ accolades while Boesing and Stogsdill were girls’ co-recipients for District 3.
The 6-7 Sroufe scored 25 points while grabbing 21 rebounds with five assists in leading the Whitko boys to a 77-75 victory over Southwood in their only game of the week. He converted 10-of-17 shots, including 2-of-2 3-pointers, plus 3-of-6 free throws in helping the Wildcats improve to 5-7 for the season.
Mulloy stood tall in a big game, scoring 17 points with 21 rebounds, three assists and one steal as the Carmel boys defeated Cathedral 71-56 in their only game of the week. The 6-10 forward, a Butler University signee, was 4-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the line in helping the Greyhounds move to 10-0 for the season.
The 5-11 Etchison poured in 46 points as the Hamilton Heights boys dropped their only game of the week, a 92-85 setback to Lapel. He added eight rebounds, two assists and five steals as the Huskies fell to 8-5. For the game, Etchison hit 18-of-35 shots, including 5-of-12 3-pointers, plus 5-of-6 free throws.
Tucker averaged 28.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in propelling the Springs Valley boys to a pair of victories. The 5-9 guard opened with 22 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 74-61 victory over West Washington. He followed with 35 points, 13 rebounds, one assist and three steals as the Blackhawks beat Shoals 59-53 to improve to 11-3. For both games, Tucker was 18-of-36 shooting, 9-of-19 from distance and 12-of-14 on free throws.
The 6-0 Clingler unloaded for 45 points, 11 rebounds in keying the Caston girls to a 69-32 triumph over Faith Christian in their only game of the week. She added three steals and two blocks while sinking 19-of-29 shots plus 7-of-12 free throws in helping the Comets moved to 6-12.
Jones averaged 33.0 points in two victories for the Western Boone girls (12-7). The 5-7 guard scored 26 points with two rebounds, one assist and one steal in an 80-20 decision over Crawfordsville. The Davenport University (Mich.) recruit broke loose for 40 points with five rebounds, eight assists and six steals as the Stars topped Frankfort 79-38. Jones was 28-of-46 from the field, 4-of-12 from distance and 6-of-8 from the line over both games. That included 17-of-25, 3-of-8 and 3-of-4 in her 40-point outing.
The 5-10 Boeing averaged 29.7 points and 11.7 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Providence girls (9-10). She opened with 21 points, 12 rebounds and two steals in a 51-41 victory over New Washington. Boesing exploded for 41 points, 11 rebounds and three assists but it was not enough as the Pioneers dropped a 57-45 decision to Charlestown. She completed her week with 27 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and five steals in a 40-32 at Henryville. Over three games, Boesing hit 30-of-57 shots, 3-of-9 3-pointers and 26-of-34 free throws. She was 16-of-25, 3-of-5 and 6-of-8 in the 41-point game.
Stogsdill averaged 29.5 points in two triumphs for Brown County (7-10). The 5-5 guard scored 33 points with 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals in a 73-36 victory over Crothersville. She followed with 26 points, two rebounds, five assists and six steals as the Eagles outlasted Trinity Lutheran 50-45. In two games, Stogsdill was 22-of-41 from the floor, 8-of-16 from long range and 7-of-11 from the line.
This is the 11th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the seventh season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”
Winners in the Player of the Week are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 23. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 23.
