Sycamore Football Picks Up Nine All-MVFC Postseason Honors

  Sycamore Football picked up nine All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors for the 2019 season, the Valley announced Monday. The All-MVFC teams are voted on by MVFC coaches, sports information directors and members of the media.

 

Wide receiver Dante Hendrix, linebacker Jonas Griffith and return specialist Dakota Caton earned First Team All-MVFC honors while fullback Dominique Dafney, center Wyatt Wozniak and place kicker Jerry Nunez earned Second Team accolades. The Sycamores also claimed three Honorable Mention selections as linebacker Clayton Glasco, defensive lineman Inoke Moala and safety Michael Thomas were recognized.

 

All-Newcomer honors will be announced on Tuesday before the League recognizes All-Academic teams on Wednesday.

 

FIRST TEAM

 

#8 WR Dante Hendrix, 6-3, 195, R-So., Florence (Ky.) Randall K. Cooper HS

Started all 12 games for the Sycamores … Led the team and ranked third in the MVFC with 653 receiving yards … Ranks fifth in the League with 51 receptions … Recorded 50 or more yards through the air in five games … Recorded a season high 135 yards at No. 5 Northern Iowa … Had a career long 70-yard reception int he finale at Missouri State … Caught touchdowns against Dayton and Illinois State … Had a 70-yard punt return touchdown at Missouri State.

 

#46 LB Jonas Griffith, 6-4, 250, R-Sr., Louisville (Ky.) Academy of Shawnee

A three-time preseason All-American and Preseason All-MVFC at linebacker in 2019 … Led the Missouri Valley Football Conference for the second consecutive season with 106 tackles, marking just the third player to ever achieve the feat … Averaged a league high 8.8 tackles per game … Had a season high 16 tackles in a win over Eastern Kentucky … Picked up four sacks and 28.5 tackles-for-loss for 115 yards on the season Forced one fumble and recovered a fumble … Became just the third player in program history to record 100 or more tackles for three consecutive seasons … Ranks third of all active FCS players in career tackles with 382 tackles.

 

#83 RS Dakota Caton, 5-10, 175, So., Sullivan (Ind.) Sullivan HS

Leads the Missouri Valley Football Conference in kick returns with a 25.5 average … Recorded returns of more than 25 yards in four games for the Sycamores … Had a long return of 67 yards in a win over Youngstown State … Ranked 20th nationally in return yard average … Third on the team with 662 all-purpose yards … Recorded 408 return yards to go with 221 receiving yards on 21 catches.

 

SECOND TEAM

 

#89 FB/WR Dominique Dafney, 6-3, 235, R-Sr., West Des Moines (Iowa) Valley HS/Iowa

Ranked second on the team with 439 yards rushing after carrying the ball during the final four games of the season … Accounted for seven total touchdowns to lead Indiana State … Rushed for six touchdowns and caught one touchdown … Recorded the fourth-best individual rushing performance in program history after a 244-yard outburst that included five total touchdowns at Missouri State … Had a season high five catches for 83 yards against South Dakota … Had 15 catches for 196 yards … Recorded 635 all-purposes yards on the season.

 

#68 OL Wyatt Wozniak, 6-3, 300, R-Sr., Cypress (Texas) Cypress Woods HS

The redshirt senior has started in 35-straight games at center … Helped the Sycamores to 2,148 yards of rushing and 2,001 yards through the air … Indiana State averaged 4.3 yards per carry and had four rushers with 200 or more yards.

 

#38 PK Jerry Nunez, 5-11, 180, Sr., Naples (Fla.) Naples HS

The team scoring leader with 67 points … Recorded 14 field goals on the season with a season long of 42 yards coming against Eastern Kentucky … Recorded three field goals of 40 yards or more … Was 25-of-26 on extra point attempts. The all-time leader in career points (268), field goals (53) and PAT’s (109) at Indiana State … Passed for a 14-yard touchdown against South Dakota State.

 

HONORABLE MENTION

 

#6 LB Clayton Glasco, 6-1, 220, Sr., Pickerington (Ohio) Pickerington Central HS/Monroe College

Finished ranked 10th in tackles with 86 and second in tackles-for-loss with 15.5 for 43 yards in the Missouri Valley Football Conference after missing three games due to injury … Ranks 20th nationally with 9.6 tackles per game and 6th with 1.6 tackles-for-loss per game … Recorded a season high 13 tackles against Dayton … Had 10 or more tackles in four of the nine games he saw action in … Recorded an interception against Eastern Illinois.

 

#13 DL Inoke Moala, 6-4, 260, R-Jr., Mishawaka (Ind.) Peru HS

Started in 11 of 12 games … Finished with 31 tackles … Ranked seventh in the MVFC with 12 tackles-for-loss for 44 yards … Recorded 3.5 sacks for 22 yards … Had six pass breakups from the defensive end position … Finished with a season high seven tackles in a win against Eastern Kentucky … Had 3.5 tackles-for-loss in a win over Western Illinois … Credited with four quarterback hurries.

 

#1 DB Michael Thomas, 6-2, 210, R-So., Corona (Calif.) Norco HS

Made the transition from wide receiver to safety in 2019 … Was third on the team with 73 tackles, including 39 solo stops … Recorded eight or more tackles in five games … Ranked 11th in tackles during Missouri Valley Football Conference play with 58 stops … Forced three fumbles on the year with back-to-back forced fumbles against Illinois State and South Dakota State … Had two interceptions with the first coming against Western Illinois and the second against Youngstown State … Recorded 2.5 tackles-for-loss and one sack.
