Aggies Tough Defense Leads to Win against Purdue 70 to 66

Texas A & M’s (#12 Excel H Sports) defense and rebounding were to key to their victory at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Saturday at the Indy Classic powered by Sports Tech HQ, 70 to 66 over the (#10) Purdue Boilermakers.

Head Coach Buzz Williams game plan worked, as they contained Trey Kaufman-Renn all game, as they kept their post at all times in the paint and would throw a quick trap and stopping him cold from his patented step down and roll to the left move, he has perfected.

The win gives the Aggies a five-game winning streak since their loss to Oregon 80 to 70.

A & M has defeated Creighton, Rutgers, Wake Forest, Texas Tech and now Purdue.

Nine of the ten A & M players seeing the floor scored as they were led by Minnesota transfer, Pharrel Payne’s 16 points, on six of six from the floor and a team-high nine boards.

Zhuric Phelps also scored 16 points on four of nine from the floor and a five of seven attempts at the free-throw line.  Phelps also had four assists.

All-SEC guard Wade Taylor IV showed why, as he was key throughout the game till an injury forced him off the hardwood with a tick above the one-minute mark.

Taylor scored 15 points on six of fifteen shooting, adding five assists and five steals.

Hayden Hefner added six, Manny Obaseki five, Anderson Garcia five, Henry Coleman III three, C J Wilcher three   and Solomon Washington adding one point.

Purdue was led by Braden Smith who tallied fifteen points, six rebounds, six assists.

Fletcher Loyer added twelve points, but all came in the first half of the game.

As the aforementioned Kaufman-Renn was held to eleven points on three of nine shots from the field before fouling out.

Camden Heide and Myles Colvin both scored nine points apiece.

The key to the game was A & M holding the Boilers scoreless for over six minutes in the second half as they opened up a twelve-point lead 62 to 50.

Purdue shot 45.3% percent from the floor as A & M shot 44%.

A & M recorded 14 offensive boards, assisted on 14 baskets and pilfered eleven Boiler passes.
