Senior guard led Penn State in scoring, assists, steals and minutes last season
ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State men’s basketball senior guard Jalen Pickett has been named to the 2022-23 Preseason All-Big Ten Team, as announced by the conference office Thursday.
Pickett is coming off a 2021-22 season in which he led the Nittany Lions in scoring (13.3 ppg), assists (135) and steals (35). The guard ranked second on the team in blocks (19), third in rebounds (133) and served as one of the Nittany Lions’ toughest defenders. He led the Big Ten and ranked 11th in all of Division I with 37.2 minutes per game and ranked second in the conference and 27th in the country with a 2.45 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The Rochester, N.Y. native scored in double figures in 25 games a season ago with four 20-point efforts. Pickett led Penn State at the Big Ten Tournament, averaging 18.0 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists per tournament game, while shooting 60.0 percent (21-35) from the field and 54.5 percent (6-11) from 3-point range.
Pickett finished the 2021-22 season as one of just six active Division I players with 1,500 career points, 500 career rebounds and 500 career assists, and one of only two to reach all three marks in just four seasons. He returns to Penn State in 2022-23 to utilize the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA due to the COVID-19 pandemic and enters his final collegiate season with career marks of 1,552 points, 598 assists and 506 rebounds.
Pickett and the Nittany Lions open the 2022-23 slate on Monday, Nov. 7 when Penn State hosts Winthrop at 7 p.m. inside the Bryce Jordan Center.
The 2022-23 Penn State men’s basketball season is presented by Highmark Health.
MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota men’s basketball standout Jamison Battle (Robbinsdale, Minn.) has been named to the 2022-23 Preseason All-Big Ten, announced today by the league office. It is Battle’s first preseason honor of his career.
A junior forward, Battle joined the Golden Gophers in the 2021-22 season after a two-year stint at George Washington. Named a Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection last year, Battle returns as one of the Big Ten’s leading scorers. In conference action alone, Battle averaged 17.1 points during Big Ten play, and ranked eighth in conference scoring. In overall play, he averaged a team-best 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds last season as a sophomore. Battle had 27 double-figure scoring games, including 11 with 20 or more points. He also established a team-best 39 points at Maryland, which tied sixth in school history for points in a game. Battle was named a Third Team All-A10 athlete at George Washington in 2020-21, where he averaged 17.3. Off the court, the DeLaSalle graduate is a sports management major and was named to the 2021-22 NABC Honors Court, given to individuals with cumulative grade point averages of 3.2 or higher.
Kris Murray Voted Preseason All-Big Ten
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s basketball junior forward Kris Murray has been named to the 2022-23 Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year. The announcement was made on Thursday by the Big Ten Conference.
It marks the fourth straight season that one or more Hawkeyes have been selected to the preseason list, voted upon by a selected panel of media. Joe Wieskamp was selected in 2019 and 2020, Luka Garza was tabbed the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year in 2020, while Kris’ twin brother Keegan Murray was recognized in 2021.
Kris Murray was Iowa’s leading scorer (9.7) and rebounder (4.3) off the bench last season. He improved his scoring average by 9.1 points and rebounding average by 3.7 per outing. The native of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was second on the team in 3-point percentage (.397), blocks per game (0.9) and field goals made (124), third in offensive (1.6) and defensive (2.7) rebounds per contest, and fourth in steals (0.8) per game. His 31 blocks and 43 triples rank seventh and eighth, respectively, by a Hawkeye sophomore. He shared the team’s Most Improved Player Award with Tony Perkins.
Murray’s best game in 2022 came in leading the Hawkeyes to victory over Indiana on Jan. 13, 2022 (29 points; 11 rebounds; 3 steals; 3 blocks).
Edey Voted Unanimous Preseason First-Team All-Big Ten
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue junior center Zach Edey has been voted a unanimous selection to the preseason All-Big Ten first-team squad, the league office announced today.
Edey is one of 11 players voted to the squad, and is one of three players voted as a unanimous selection (Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson, Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis). The other players voted in were Terrence Shannon Jr. (Illinois), Kris Murray (Iowa), Malik Hall (Michigan State), Jamison Battle (Minnesota), Jalen Pickett (Penn State), Clifford Omoruyi (Rutgers), Chucky Hepburn (Wisconsin) and Tyler Wahl (Wisconsin).
Edey, a preseason All-American as well, was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree and honorable mention All-American (AP) a year ago after averaging 14.4 points, 7.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.2 blocks in just 19.0 minutes per game, while leading the Big Ten and ranking third nationally in field goal percentage at 64.8 percent – the fifth-best single-season percentage in school history.
He is the only player in the last 30 years to average 14.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 blocks in under 20 minutes per game. In fact, he is one of just five players to accomplish that in under 25.0 minutes per game.
Edey, a 7-foot, 4-inch center from Toronto, recorded 11 double-doubles during the 2021-22 season and was named to the Hall of Fame Tipoff Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 15.0 points in wins over North Carolina and Villanova in November. He tallied a career-high 25 points against Michigan State in February and scored 20 or more points in nine games. He will carry a streak of 17 straight games in double-figures into this season.
He was at his best against ranked teams. In nine games against ranked squads, Edey averaged 16.3 points and 7.7 rebounds in just 20.2 minutes per game, while shooting 60.6 percent from the field.
The Boilermakers will open the regular season on Nov. 8, when Milwaukee visits Mackey Arena. Purdue’s lone exhibition game will be Nov. 2, when Truman State visits West Lafayette. Single-game tickets will go on sale to John Purdue Club members on Oct. 18, and to the general public Oct. 21.
