Hawkeyes’ Garza and Fredrick claim weekly awards

 

Player of the Week

Luka Garza, Iowa

C – Jr. – 6-11 – Washington, D.C. – Maret School – Major: Business

• Averaged 30 points, five rebounds, and 1.5 blocks in a pair of victories over Northwestern and No. 19 Michigan
• Connected on 10 field goals in both games averaging .625 from the field and shot .667 from the three-point line for the week
• Poured in 33 points, bolstered by a career-high 11 free-throws made, in a seven-point triumph over the Wolverines on Friday
• Posted 77 points in two games versus Michigan this season, the most points by any Big Ten player versus a single opponent in regular season conference play over the last 20 seasons
• Now has four 30+ scoring games this year, the most by a Hawkeye since Peter Jok (5) in 2017 and ranks fourth nationally and most by any player from a Power 5 conference this year
• In Iowa’s win at Northwestern, led all scorers with 27 points and scored Iowa’s first 10 points of the game as well as posted 14 straight points in the second half
• Earns the second Player of the Week accolade of his career; was a two-time Freshman of the Week honoree in 2017-18

G – 6-3 – Cincinnati, Ohio – Covington Catholic – Major: Sport and Recreation Management

• Scored in double figures in a pair of Iowa wins, posting 11 points at Northwestern and 21 points versus No. 19 Michigan averaging 16 points per game for the week
• Shot .750 from the three-point line versus the Wolverines and .667 from the field
• Tied personal bests in assists (5) and steals (2) in the win at Northwestern
• Also tied a personal best with 21 points in a home win versus the Wolverines
• Helped Iowa win its seventh game of the last nine outings, including the Hawkeyes’ third win over a ranked team this season
• Earns his first Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor of his career

Hoosiers’ Mackenzie Holmes, Golden Gophers’ Sara Scalia and Wildcats’ Abi Scheid are this week’s honorees

 

Player of the Week

Abi Scheid, Northwestern

F – Sr. – Elk River, Minn. – Elk River – Major: Learning and Organizational Change

• Averaged 20.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game with a .789 field-goal percentage and .800 three-point percentage in Northwestern’s two Big Ten wins last week

• Tied a Big Ten record on Sunday’s victory over Penn State, going 6-of-6 from three-point range while scoring a season-high 24 points and grabbing a season high-tying seven rebounds

• Scored a team-high 16 points along with seven rebounds and four assists on Jan. 16 in an overtime win at No. 15/16 Indiana

• Named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten honoree last season

• Earns her first Big Ten Player of the Week award

Monika Czinano, So., F/C, IOWA: Averaged 20.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game with a .900 field-goal percentage in the Hawkeyes’ two conference victories last week

Kaila Charles, Sr., G, MD: Gathered 23 points, seven rebounds, three blocks and three steals on Jan. 16 to help the No. 20/20 Terrapins defeat Nebraska

Nia Clouden, So., G, MSU: Scored 20 points and dished out six assists on Jan. 16 as the Spartans rallied past Ohio State

Mackenzie Holmes, Indiana

F – Gorham, Maine – Gorham – Major: Social Work

• Tied her career high with 22 points and added nine rebounds for the No. 15/16 Hoosiers on Jan. 16 in a two-point overtime loss to Northwestern

• Converted 9-of-14 shots from the field in 27 minutes of action

• Posted her 12th double-digit scoring game this season

• Collects her third Freshman of the Week award

• Recorded her first career double-double on Jan. 16 in a one-point loss to No. 22/24 Iowa, finishing with a team-best 18 points and a career-high 10 rebounds

• Added a team-high 18 points in Minnesota’s win at Purdue on Sunday afternoon
