#11 Excel H Sports Purdue gets Hoosiers Best Effort Friday Night

    The #11 Excel H Sports Ranked Purdue Boilermakers held off the Indiana Hoosiers 81-76 in a Sold-Out Mackey Arena in West Lafayette Friday Night. Purdue is 17-5 overall and 9-2 in the Big Ten and Indiana drops to 14-8 overall and 5-6 in the Big Ten. Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn combined for 47 points to lead Purdue to the win.

     Smith from Westfield, Indiana led Purdue with 24 points on 11-21 shooting, 2-4 from the free throw line and 0-1 from three-point range. Kaufman-Renn from Sellersburg, Indiana scored 23 points and gave Purdue the lead with 11 seconds at 77-76 on a hook shot. Purdue finished the game on a 6-0 in the final 11 seconds as Fletcher Loyer and Kaufman-Renn hit four free throws to seal the win.

Loyer from Fort Wayne, Indiana added 11 points and went 6-7 from the free throw line. Purdue finished 29-55 from the field for 52%, 2-13 from three-point range for 15% and 21-28 from the free throw line 75%. Purdue pulled down 26 rebounds, 9 assists, 13 steals, 1 block and committed 10 turnovers.

Mackenize Mgbako led Indiana with 25 points, Trey Galloway added 15 points off the bench, Oumar Ballo scored 14 points and Luke Goode added 13 points but when Purdue’s Cam Hiede was defending him, he was shut down and took away a key piece. Indiana finished 30-56 from the field for 56%, 7-19 from three-point range for 36% and 9-16 from the field for 53%. Indiana pulled down 32 rebounds, dished out 14 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks and committed 20 turnovers.

    The Sold-out crowd was electric before the game even started and stayed that way through the entire game. It’s what you expect in a rivalry game and neither team led by more than 7 points as there were 15 lead changes and 6 ties in this in-state matchup.
    Luke Goode drained a three pointer to give Indiana the 21-20 lead and then Purdue’s Raliegh Burgess was called for a technical foul with 9:45 left in the first half as Goode hit both free throws to give IU a three-point lead 23-20. Purdue led 29-27 when the Hoosiers went on an 8-0 to lead 36-29 with 3:46 left in the first half. Indiana led 41-37 at halftime.

      Goode had scored 13 first half points, but a change of defense was needed at the beginning of the second half and that answer was Cam Heide as he held Goode scoreless the remainder of the game.

   Trey Kaufman-Renn came out of the locker room a halftime and was a man on mission scoring seven straight points to the give the Boilers a 44-41 lead with 18:46 left in the second half. Malik Reneau ended the drought hitting a free throw with 18:32 left in the game. Indiana went on a 12-0 run that was sparked by 7 straight points from Mackenize Mgbako.

    The Hoosiers led 63-58 with 7:36 left in regulation. Neither game was going to go away as the teams traded buckets back and forth.
    Indiana led 67-61 with 5:36 left when Purdue responded with 8-0 to lead 69-67 with 3:40 left in the second half. Mgbako drained a three pointer with 2:56 left. Flecther Loyer made a jumper and completed the three-point play to give Purdue a 72-70 lead with 2:34 left Mgbako hit two free throws to tie the game 72-72 with 2:23 left. Braden Smith hit two free throws and C.J. Cox added a free throw to lead 75-72 with 1:37 left.

Trey Galloway scored the next four points for Indiana as they led 76-75 with 29 seconds. Purdue finished out the game with a 6-0 run as Kaufman-Renn hit the hooks shot and Indiana had three players foul out late in the game with Anthony Leal, Malik Reneau and Oumar Ballo all heading to the bench. Purdue leads the All-Time Series 128-92 and 82-26 all-time in West Lafayette and have won three straight games in the series.

    Purdue Head Coach Matt Painter said after the game that “We were fortunate Trey Galloway didn’t have the ball in his hands at the end. Let’s be frank about it. He was making plays. Painter added that he was not prepared for Galloway to use his right hand which was huge for Indiana. “I did a poor job with it. We should have been more prepared in that area.” Painter said after the game. These two teams will meet a Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on February 23rd as Purdue will go for the season sweep for the second straight year.

  • Purdue improved to 17-5 overall and 9-2 in the Big Ten standings with a hard-fought 81-76 win over Indiana in Mackey Arena.
  • The Boilermakers won their second straight game overall and third in a row against the Hoosiers. Matt Painter is now 22-12 all-time against Indiana.
  • Purdue has won 16 of its last 20 games against Indiana. Purdue is 9-1 against Indiana in the last 10 meetings in Mackey Arena.
  • Purdue outscored Indiana, 20-9, in the last five minutes to rally from a 67-61 deficit.
  • The win was Purdue’s 1,946th all-time win, moving the Boilermakers past Indiana (1,945 wins) for 10th on the NCAA’s all-time wins list.
  • The victory was Purdue’s 11th quad-one and two victory this season, good for the third most in the country (Auburn, Alabama – 13).
  • Purdue is 9-2 in the Big Ten for the sixth time under Matt Painter (2025, 2024, 2023, 2019, 2018, 2008).
  • Purdue is 4-1 in its last five games, despite going just 19-of-71 (.268) from 3-point range in the last five games.
  • Purdue is now 103-3 since the start of the 2017-18 season when scoring at least 80 points.
  • Purdue forced 20 Indiana turnovers, the second straight game that Purdue has forced at least 20 turnovers (Michigan – 22). It’s the first time has forced 20 or more turnovers in consecutive games since Nov. 16 to 20, 2014 vs. IUPUI and Grambling. It’s the first time in Big Ten play since Feb. 19 to Feb. 27, 2008 against Indiana and Minnesota.
  • Purdue outscored Indiana 26-15 in points off turnovers. Over the last three games, Purdue holds an 85-28 advantage in points off turnovers.
  • In the last three seasons with Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer as the starting backcourt, Purdue is now 80-16 (.833) overall and 41-10 (.804) in Big Ten play.
  • The senior class, consisting of Caleb Furst, is now 109-24 (.820), tied for the second-most wins by a senior class in school history.
  • Braden Smith scored 24 points with seven assists and six steals, becoming the second player nationally this season to reach those marks (Devin Askew, Long Beach State vs. Hawaii; Dec. 7, 2024).
  • His six steals are tied for the fifth most in a game in school history and the second most in a Big Ten game in school history.
  • Smith finished the month of January with 158 points, 82 assists and 28 steals in the nine games. He is the first player this century (men’s or women’s) to have reached 150+ points, 80+ assists and 25+ steals in any single calendar month.
  • For his career, Smith now has 639 assists, moving past Michigan State’s Mateen Cleaves for second for the most assists by a Big Ten player in his first three seasons (1st – Cassius Winston; 714). His 639 assists are now tied for the 14th most in Big Ten history.
  • When Braden Smith surpasses 20 points during his career, Purdue is 12-0.
  • Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 23 points with four rebounds, two steals and one assist, while going 10-of-13 from the field. Kaufman-Renn has scored at least 12 points in all 11 Big Ten games, while scoring at least 11 points in all 22 games this season. Kaufman-Renn was +21 in 26 minutes played.
  • Gicarri Harris scored a career-high nine points and had a block on Indiana’s final possession to secure the victory.
