IBCA Subway Players of the Week and All Nominees

Week-7 IBCA/Subway Player of the Week Honors Go Out Just in Time for the Holidays

While several teams around the state trimmed their schedule back to just one game last week, and others took the entire week off completely, there were still plenty of really nice performances worthy of consideration for Player of the Week honors.

Chesterton Senior Jake Wadding, Blackford Junior Luke Brown, Evansville Bosse Sophomore Julian Norris, Fort Wayne Northrop Junior TiAuna White, Tri-West Sophomore Kenna Kirby, and Vincennes Lincoln Junior Maycee Lange were selected as recipients for the week of Dec. 16-Dec. 21 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

Wadding is the boys’ recipient and White is the girls’ recipient for District-1. Brown is the boys’ winner and Kirby is the girls’ winner for District-2. Norris and Lange earn the boys’ and girls’ awards, respectively, for District-3.

District-2 seems to be where the most noise was made, as Kenna Kirby and Luke Brown posted huge numbers last week in their lone game each. Kirby helped her Tri-West Bruins to a 78-68 home win against Zionsville. The 5-8 Sophomore guard was ripping the twine, as she shot 14-20 from the field, 7-10 from 3-point range, and 9-9 from the charity stripe, on her way to an outstanding 44 points Thursday evening. She also added three rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a blocked shot in the effort.

Friday night it was Luke Brown’s opportunity to post big numbers, as he was 17-25 from the field, 8-12 from 3-point range, and 5-5 from the line, on the way to his impressive 47-point outburst. The 6-1 Junior guard also handed out ten assists, grabbed four rebounds, and collected seven steals in Blackford’s big win over conference foe Elwood.

Maycee Lange contributed a pair of double-doubles to Vincennes Lincoln’s current eight-game winning streak. Tuesday the Alices knocked off a worthy opponent, as they went into Evansville Memorial and won 59-54. The 6-0 Junior forward scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and added an assist and a steal in Lincoln’s big win.

Thursday evening, they returned to action, defeating Lawrenceville (IL) 73-48. In that outing, Lange was again strong inside, as she scored 30 points this time out. She again collected 13 rebounds, added a steal, and blocked a shot. She shot over 60% from the floor in the two games, going 21-33 from the field. She was also a combined 8-10 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Julian Norris helped Evansville Bosse to a 2-1 week. Tuesday, Norris scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds, and handed out two assists in an 87-46 conference win against Evansville Memorial. Friday night was a bit different outcome, as Bosse fell 69-65 at Washington. Norris was strong again, though, contributing 25 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the loss.

But the 6-3 guard probably saved his best game for Saturday. Bosse got a big 57-56 win against a very good Gary West Side team. In that outing, Norris scored 27 of their 57 points, he grabbed six rebounds, and he handed out five assists for the Bulldogs.

Northrop Junior forward TiAuna White has quietly put up good numbers all season. Last week she and her Bruins took on Summit Athletic Conference rival, Fort Wayne South Side, but they came up short, losing 78-60 to the Archers in their only game of the week. The 5-10 White scored 25 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and added an assist and a steal in defeat. She also knocked down three 3-pointers and made both of her free throws Friday evening.

Jake Wadding of Chesterton had the rare three-game week like Norris (above). Tuesday night, the Trojans knocked off East Chicago Central, 57-30. Wadding scored 26 points in the win. Friday night, the 6-4 wing returned to action at Gary 21st Century, scoring 29 points and adding seven rebounds in a narrow 50-48 win.

Wadding and the Trojans weren’t done, as they had to turn around and play again Saturday at Grace College against South Bend Washington. They posted a decisive 59-45 win over the Panthers, keeping their undefeated start (9-0) intact. Wadding seemed comfortable in scoring 20 points at Grace, which will be his new home next season, as he has signed to play for the Lancers.

This is the 12th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program, and the eighth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its eighth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh”.

Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Girls State Finals. Boys winners will be chosen through the Monday following the IHSAA Boys State Finals.
