EVANSTON, Ill. – Aaron Wiggins scored a career-high 26 points, but Maryland (15-11, 9-10) couldn’t convert on a handful of late opportunities as Northwestern (8-14, 5-13) sealed a 60-55 win over the Terps Wednesday night.
Darryl Morsell finished with 14 points, while Boo Buie (15) and Chase Audige (14) led the way for Northwestern.
With the game tied at 54 a free throw from Morsell would give the Terps a one-point edge with 2:32 to play. But the Terps went cold from there as Northwestern retook the lead on a Ryan Young layup at 1:30.
A flurry of missed three point attempts opened the door for the Wildcats to finish things off from the charity stripe, making their final four attempts to put the game out of reach.
The Terps got off to a hot start at Welsh-Ryan Arena, racing out to an early 9-0 lead over the Wildcats. Maryland couldn’t sustain the offensive momentum, as hot shooting from Northwestern opened up a deficit on the visitors midway through the first.
Maryland managed to close the gap before the half, heading into the locker room down 28-26.
Maryland will return home for its final home game of the 2020-21 regular season to host Penn State on Sunday, March 7. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
