Indiana traded punches with Ball State throughout the game, inside Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday afternoon, before securing a 34 to 24 victory to open the 2019 campaign for the Hoosiers and Cardinals.

Both teams came in with questions and left with more questions for Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen and Ball State’s Mike Neu, after a game that saw both teams learning how to play together.

The scoreboard showed Indiana taking a 10 t0 3 first quarter lead, 16 to 10 at the half, 23 to 17 at the end of three and the final tally of 34 to 24.
One question that was answered clearly was Indiana field goal kicker Logan Justus (R-SR, McCordsville) who nailed four separate kicks from 30 yards, 49 yards, 50 yards and 48 yards.
Syracuse, New York Sophomore Stevie Scott II was solid, though he only had 19 carries for 52 yards and three receptions for another 28 yards.

Michael Penix, Jr. a redshirt freshman from Tampa, Florida had a competent debut with 24 of 40 passing attempts and two picks for 326 yards and seven carries for 69 yards.

The highlight of Penix’s Hoosier debut was a pin point strike to Lake Mary, Florida, Redshirt Senior Nick Westbrook for 75 yards in the opening quarter. Westbrook totaled 103 yards through the air for the afternoon.

Whop Philyor, Tampa, Florida Junior led Indiana with six catches for 66 yards while teammate Lucedale, Mississippi Junior Ty Fryfogle caught six passes for another 41. Former Tri West Bruin Peyton Hendershot hauled in four balls for 69 yards.

Ball State quarterback, Redshirt Junior, Loveland, Ohio native Drew Plitt threw 41 times with 26 completions for 298 yards.

Douglasville, Georgia Junior Justin Hall was the top Cardinal receiver with six catches for 39 yards while Yorktown red shirt Senior Riley Miller hauling in five catches for 51 yards, Columbia, Maryland grad student Walter Fletcher catching four for 45 yards and New Orleans, Louisana Sophomore Yo’Heinz Tyler caught three passes for another 71 yards.

Melbourne, Australia’s red shirt senior Haydon Whitehead was another question answered as he was outstanding punting three times for 155 yards for a whopping 51.7 average for the Hoosiers.
On defense, Lake Haven, Florida’s Reakwon Jones tallied 11 total tackles while Roswell, Georgia’s Junior Marcelino Ball added ten total tackles, Devon Matthews totaled nine tackles while both Cam Jones and Micah McFadden adding six a piece for the Hoosiers.
Ball State’s defense was led by Louisville, Kentucky Junior Bryce Cosby, Clarendon, Illinois red shirt Senior Jacob White and Lansing, Michigan Senior Ray Wilborn with nine total tackles.

Indiana now goes home to face Eastern Illinois while Ball State welcomes Fordham.
