Jaloni Cambridge Named Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association released their weekly awards on Tuesday.

  

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced its weekly women’s basketball awards on Tuesday. Ohio State freshman guard Jaloni Cambridge was named the Tamika Catchings National Freshman of the Week. Cambridge was also named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday.

Cambridge averaged a team-high 22.3 points, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game in the Buckeyes’ three games this past week, also leading the team in field goals (20), three-pointers (7) and free throws (20).

She began the week with a game-leading 29 points in last Monday’s win against Iowa and added four assists, three rebounds and made both of her three-point attempts. Cambridge scored six of the Buckeyes’ 12 overtime points to secure the win. In Thursday’s game at Indiana, Cambridge again scored the most points in the game with 18 and added four steals, four rebounds and a pair of assists. On Sunday against Purdue, Cambridge finished with 20 points (one shy of the game-high), five assists, four steals and three rebounds. She was a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe and tied her career-high three triples made.

This season, Cambridge leads the team with eight 20-point games and has scored in double figures 18 out of 23 games. Cambridge is averaging 15.6 points per game and leads the Buckeyes in assists (90). She also ranks fourth in the Big Ten in steals per game (2.3).
