Purdue Hammers Indiana State in Season Opener

On a warm, humid, late August afternoon in West Lafayette, the Purdue Boilermakers opened up their 2024 season with a solid win over FCS, Missouri Valley’s Indiana State.

The Boilers opened up their scoring, in front of 59,488 packed in Ross Aide Stadium when Hudson Card hit Max Klare with a nine-yard throw and a six-point lead with 9:07 left in the first quarter. Spencer Porath’s extra point made it seven to nothing Purdue.

Purdue would score again with 13:21 remaining in the second quarter when once again, Card would connect on a eight-yard pass to Jaron Tibbs, Tibbs first Purdue touchdown, and pull ahead 14 to nothing after another Porath extra point.

De’Nylon Morrissette would score his first Boilermaker touchdown when he collected yet another Card throw, this time from eight yards again to boost their score to 21 to zero at the half.

The second half was all Purdue as they would score with Reggie Love III’s eight-yard run, a Leland Smith score from Card from 31 yards and two runs in the final stanza.

One from Elijah Jackson from 69 yards and Jaheim Merriweather’s four-yard run.

Purdue was led by Hudson Card’s 24 of 25 passing day for 273 yards with backup Ryan Brown’s six of ten for 62 yards.

Boonville, Indiana’s Devin Mockabee led the Boiler rushing game with eleven carries for 89 yards with Elijah Jackson’s 83 yards on three carries.

Max Klare led the receiving crew with 71 yards on five receptions, Jamal Edine’s 59 yards on four catches, Leland Smith’s 47 yards on two catches and Tibbs 30 receiving yards with four receptions.

Both Will Heldt and Antonio Stevens recording seven tackles.

Indiana State was led by Elijah Owen’s 47 yards on nine carries.

Purdue is now off until highly ranked Notre Dame comes to town in two weeks while Curt Mallory’s Indiana State travels to Eastern Illinois, September 7, 2024.
