Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week

Each week during the 2025 season the Maxwell Football Club will recognize an outstanding performance by a college freshman with the Shaun Alexander Freshman Player of the Week award. The Shaun Alexander Player of the Week will be recognized for overall performance on offense, defense or special teams and players selected do not have to be represented on the Shaun Alexander Award preseason watch list.

RB – Ja’Kyrian Turner

Pitt

Pittsburgh true freshman running back Ja’Kyrian Turner earned the Shaun Alexander Player of the Week selection after powering the Panthers to a crucial win over No. 16 Georgia Tech. Turner put on a breakout performance with 201 yards on 21 carries (9.57 YPC) and a late touchdown that sealed the victory. His 56-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter highlighted his burst and vision while setting the tone for a career night

Turner finished as the centerpiece of Pitt’s offense, accounting for more than half of the team’s total production and consistently flipping field position with explosive gains. He became Pitt’s first 200-yard rusher since 2022 and the first freshman to hit that mark in a decade. With poise well beyond his age and a performance that lifted his team in a must-win game, Ja’Kyrian Turner proved why he is one of the most exciting young backs in the country.

The Maxwell Football Club and the Shaun Alexander Award have once again partnered with Pro Football Focus (PFF) and Phil Steele Publications as selection committee partners. PFF provides detailed metrics and performance-based assessments to selection committee staff, with several senior PFF analysts are members of our selection committee. Phil Steele’s College Football Preview is generally recognized as the most complete preseason magazine.
