Hoosiers Experiences Deja Vu in Second Loss to the Ducks

The #8 seed Oregon Ducks beat the Indiana Hoosiers 72-59 Thursday Afternoon in the second round of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament presented by TIAA at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Oregon is 24-8 on the season and will face top seed Michigan State Spartans tomorrow at noon in the Quarterfinals. Indiana is 19-13 will wait until 6 PM Sunday to find out if they are one of the 68 teams in this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament.

Oregon beat Indiana 73-64 in Eugene on March 4. The Ducks used a 10-0 run at the end of the game to beat the Hoosiers for the first time in the series. This is the first time that two teams have played in the State of Indiana and the Ducks will visit Bloomington next year in the regular season. Indiana won three meetings against Oregon at the Far West Classic in Portland in 1966, 1973 and 1978.
Indiana Head Coach Mike Woodson beat Oregon 68-60 when he scored 36 points and pulled down 9 rebounds on December 28, 1978. Woodson is now 0-2 against Oregon and depending on what happens for the postseason this could be the final for the Indiana Head Coach who announced in February he was retiring at the end of the season.
Malik Reneau
The Hoosiers struggled down the stretch trailing 56-54 with 7:33 left in the second half after a Malik Reneau layup. Oregon outscored the Hoosiers 16-5 down the stretch and Hoosier Fans felt deja vu after what happened in Eugene nine days ago. Indiana went 25-69 from the field for 36 percent, 4-16 from three-point range for 25 percent and 5-15 from the free throw line for 50 percent.
Trey Galloway
Malik Reneau scored 19 points off the bench. Trey Galloway scored 15 points and Mackenzie Mgbako added 12 points. Oumar Ballo had 8 points and 8 rebounds. Luke Goode scored 1 point going 0-5 from the field, 0-4 from three-point range and 1-2 from the free throw line.
Indiana pulled down 35 rebounds, dished out 22 assists, 5 blocks 3 steals and committed 11 turnovers. Oregon led 37-29 at halftime and outscored the Hoosiers 35-30 in the second half.
Jackson Shelstad
Jackson Shelstad scored 18 points for the Ducks. TJ Bamba added 17 points and Brandon Angel scored 14 points. Nate Bittle scored 7 points and pulled down 8 rebounds. Oregon went 26-53 from the field for 49 percent, 8-20 from three-point range for 40 percent and 12-15 from the free throw line. Oregon pulled down 34 rebounds, 16 assists, 8 steals, 2 blocks and committed 14 turnovers.
Nate Bittle
Oregon lives to see another day and they know they are in the NCAA Tournament. For Indiana they have the long wait as coming in they were projected as one of the last four teams in field and now they wait to see if they will be on the right side or wrong side of the bubble and how many more possible games are left for Mike Woodson before his coaching career will come to a close. Sunday will determine exactly what it will be.

Boilers Grind Out a Win Over The Trojans

The #6 Seed Purdue Boilermakers Squeaked out a win Thursday Night over the #14 Seed USC Trojans 76-71 in the second round of the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament Presented by TIAA at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The Boilermakers are 22-10 on the season and will face #3 Seed Michigan tomorrow night at 9 PM in the Quarterfinals and USC ends the season at 16-17.
Trey Kaufman-Renn
Trey Kaufman-Renn led Purdue with 30 points and 7 rebounds, Fletcher Loyer added 14 points, Braden Smith scored 12 points and Cam Heide pulled down 11 rebounds and scored 9 points.
Purdue finished the game 26-55 from the field for 47 percent, 9-23 from three-point range down 39 percent and 15-23 from the free throw line for 65 percent. The Boilermakers pulled down 36 rebounds, 13 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks and committed 10 turnovers.
Desmond Claude
Desmond Claude scored 18 points for USC and put the Trojans on his back down the stretch as he ran the offense and look for the shot to keep the Trojans in the game. Wesley Yates III added 13 points as Rashaun Agee and Matt Knowling scored 11 points apiece.
Wendell Yates III
USC went 27-62 from the field for 43 percent, 7-24 from three-point range for 29 percent and 10-14 from the free throw line for 71 percent. USC pulled down 33 rebounds, 12 assists, 3 blocks, 3 steals and committed 10 turnovers.
Braden Smith
The game was tied 35-35 at halftime as Purdue outscored USC 41-36 in the second half. The game was tied 71-71 with 55 seconds left. Rashaun Agee committed foul with 28 seconds left as Trey Kaufman-Renn hit threw free throws and Braden Smith added two more with 3 seconds left as the Boilermakers went five for six from the line and USC did not score in the final 55 seconds of the game.

- No. 20-ranked and sixth-seeded Purdue advanced to Friday’s Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals with a 76-71 win over USC on Thursday night.
- The win improved Purdue’s record to 22-10 overall. The win was Purdue’s ninth victory in its last 11 games in Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
- Purdue improved to 1-0 all-time in the tournament’s second round. The Boilermakers will carry a 10-9 record in the quarterfinals into Friday’s tilt with Michigan.
- Purdue has won seven of its last nine games in the Big Ten Tournament, dating to the 2022 tournament here in Indianapolis.
- The win was Purdue’s 16th quad-1 or quad-2 victory, tied for the sixth most in the country.
- Purdue has now won 114 games in the last four seasons (since 2021-22), tied for the seventh most by a senior class in Big Ten history. A win over Michigan would tie the class for the fourth-most victories by a class in league history.
- Purdue went 9-of-23 from 3-point range, and is now 69-of-161 (.429) from 3-point range in the last seven games.
- Purdue had nine turnovers in the first half, but just one in the second half.
- Purdue’s bench had 19 points, going 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-10 from 3-point range with three turnovers.
- Trey Kaufman-Renn tied a career high with 30 points and had seven rebounds and two assists. Kaufman-Renn is now 21st on the single-season points scored list with 642 points.
- Kaufman-Renn is now averaging 20.1 points per game on the season.
- Braden Smith scored 12 points with nine assists, three rebounds and a steal. Smith now has 518 points, 281 assists, 148 rebounds and 73 steals. He needs two rebounds and two steals to become the second player in NCAA history (Georgia Tech’s Kenny Anderson, 1989-90) to have at least 500 points, 275 assists, 150 rebounds and 75 steals in a season.
- Smith has 726 assists in his career, needing just five assists to move into the top five in career assists by a Big Ten player. His 726 assists are the seventh most by a player in NCAA history through the end of his junior season.
- Kaufman-Renn and Smith are the first Purdue teammates to each have at least two 30-point games in the same season.
- Camden Heide had nine points (3-of-3 from 3-point range) with a career-high 11 rebounds in 30 minutes of action.
