Michigan State, Ohio State Earn Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors

Buckeyes’ Keita Bates-Diop earns second-consecutive Player of the Week award; Spartans’ Jaren Jackson Jr. named Freshman of the Week for third time

 

Player of the Week

Keita Bates-Diop, Ohio State

F – Jr. – 6-7 – Normal, Ill. – University High

  • Averaged 23 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.5 blocks in 33 minutes per game and went 18-of-34 (.529) from the field in two wins last week
  • Scored 26 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a 91-69 win vs. Maryland
  • Finished one rebound shy of a double-double in a 68-46 win at Rutgers (20 points, nine rebounds) and added five blocks
  • Shot 8-of-15 (.533) from 3-point range last week
  • Earns his third career Big Ten Player of the Week honor
  • Last Ohio State Player of the Week: Keita Bates-Diop (Jan. 8, 2018 and Dec. 11, 2017; Prior: D’Angelo Russell on Feb. 9, 2015)

Freshman of the Week

Jaren Jackson Jr., Michigan State

F – 6-11 – Carmel, Ind. – La Lumiere

  • Averaged 17.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game in a pair of games last week
  • Tied a career high with 19 points against Michigan and added six blocks and three rebounds
  • Scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds and had two blocks in a 76-72 win in overtime vs. Rutgers
  • Earns his third career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor to become one of 16 students to earn three or more Big Ten Freshman of the Week awards in a season

Iowa’s Megan Gustafson, Michigan’s Hailey Brown and Michigan State’s Taryn McCutcheon are this week’s honorees

 

Co-Player of the Week

Megan Gustafson, Iowa

F/C – Jr. – Port Wing, Wis. – South Shore

• Scored a career-high 37 points on 17-of-23 field goals, while adding 14 rebounds for her NCAA-leading 17th double-double of the season in last Saturday’s loss at home to Purdue

• Tied a school record with her 17 made field goals, matching Amy Herrig’s total against Northwestern on Feb. 14, 1999

• Also tied for the second-most field goals made in a Big Ten game and most since Minnesota’s Rachel Banham made a conference-record 19 field goals against Northwestern on Feb. 7, 2016

• Earns her seventh career Player of the Week honor and sixth of the season, tying the Big Ten record for the most Player of the Week awards in a single season set by Ohio State’s Jantel Lavender in 2010-11

• Last Iowa Player of the Week: Megan Gustafson (Jan. 2, 2018)

Taryn McCutcheon, Michigan State

• Registered a career-high 25 points, including 6-of-10 three-pointers while adding five assists, four rebounds and four steals in the Spartans’ win at No. 11 Maryland last Thursday

• Her six three-pointers tied for seventh in school history and were the most by an MSU student since Tori Jankoska made eight treys against Ohio State on Jan. 10, 2017

• Helped Michigan State to its first-ever win over Maryland and became the first Big Ten school other than Ohio State to defeat the Terrapins in their four seasons as a conference member

• Collects her first career Player of the Week award

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll

Katelynn Flaherty, Sr., G, MICH: Averaged 24.5 points and 4.0 assists per game in two Wolverine wins last week, while also becoming Michigan’s all-time leading scorer (male or female) with 2,457 career points, passing former Wolverine men’s standout Glen Rice (2,442 from 1985-89)

Stephanie Mavunga, Sr., F, OSU: Collected her third consecutive double-double and ninth of the season with 20 points and 18 rebounds last Saturday in the Buckeyes’ win at Indiana

Andreona Keys, Sr., G, PUR: Instrumental in Purdue’s two victories over ranked opponents last week, averaging 22.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game with a .571 field-goal percentage and a .714 three-point percentage, including a career-high 34 points in last Saturday’s win at No. 18/17 Iowa

 

Freshman of the Week

Hailey Brown, Michigan

F – Hamilton, Ontario – The RISE Centre

• Averaged 17.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game with a .682 field-goal percentage, including 4-of-4 three-point attempts in leading No. 23/20 Michigan to a pair of Big Ten wins last week

• Scored a career-high 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting (and made all three of her three-point tries) while grabbing eight rebounds in last Wednesday’s victory over Indiana

• Added 12 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season in last Saturday’s overtime win at Nebraska

• Earns her first career Freshman of the Week honor
