Beeler, Rice headline IBCA/Subway Players of the Week
Warren Central, Paoli juniors help their programs capture long-sought girls’ regional crowns
Warren Central junior Shaila Beeler and Paoli junior Jacqlyn Rice came up big when it counted most, each leading her respective team to a regional crown and headlining the recipients in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Beeler and Rice are joined by North Judson freshman Lilliann Frasure as a girls’ winner for the week of Feb. 5-10. The boys’ honorees are Lakeland senior Camron Bontrager, Guerin Catholic senior Zach Munson, Tri-County senior Bennie Patterson and New Albany senior Romeo Langford.
Bontrager and Frasure are honorees for District 1. Munson, Patterson and Beeler are winners for District 2. Langford and Rice are recipients in District 3.
The 5-7 Beeler propelled the Warren Central girls (18-7) to a pair of victories in the Class 4A regional at Decatur Central. First, she scored 17 points – including a game-tying 3-pointer with eight seconds left in regulation – with four rebounds and five assists in a 58-50 overtime decision against Brownsburg.
Beeler then erupted for 33 points with five rebounds and one assist as the Warriors knocked off No. 1-ranked Pike 61-58 for the program’s fourth regional crown and its first since 1991. Over both games, Beeler hit 13-of-20 shots, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range, and 20-of-27 free throws.
The 5-11 Rice notched one triple-double and a near second triple-double in sparking the Paoli girls (24-5) to a Class 2A regional crown in their own gym.
Rice totaled 18 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and two steals in a 39-32 semifinal triumph over Evansville Mater Dei. She followed with a triple-double – 19 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals – as the Rams defeated South Ripley 55-44 in the final. For the day, Rice made 10 field goals, two 3-pointers and 15-of-19 free throws as Paoli captured the program’s second regional title and first since 1980.
The 5-9 Frasure shined for the North Judson girls (21-3) in a regional semifinal setback to Hammond Noll. Frasure poured in 32 points with 16 rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Blue Jays fell 65-54 in the 2A regional at Winamac. For the game, she was 14-of-31 from the floor, 1-of-3 from distance and 3-of-5 on free throws.
Bontrager poured in 37 points on dead-eye marksmanship in leading the Lakeland boys to a 62-60 victory over Goshen in his team’s only game of the week. The 5-11 guard added three rebounds and two steals as the Lakers improved to 12-7. For the game, Bontrager was 14-of-18 from the field, 4-of-7 from 3-point range and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.
The 6-7 Munson totaled 30 points with 11 rebounds and four assists in keying the Guerin Catholic boys (13-7) to a 96-53 triumph over Indianapolis Washington in the Golden Eagles’ only game of the week. A University of Chicago recruit, Munson hit 14-of-17 shots, including one 3-pointer, plus one free throw en route to his big game.
Patterson averaged 28.0 points and 3.5 assists in leading the Tri-County boys (16-2) to a pair of victories. The 5-10 guard scored 32 points with four rebounds, five assists and four steals in a 69-53 decision over Benton Central. He then produced 24 points with one rebounds, three assists and seven steals in an 82-28 runaway over West Central. Over both games, Patterson sank 18-of-33 field goals, 6-of-11 3-pointers and 14-of-15 free throws.
The 6-5 Langford had yet another epic week, averaging 42.0 points and 11.0 rebounds as the New Albany boys improved to 19-1. Langford poured in 53 points with 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 92-44 triumph over Providence. He followed with 31 points (moving his career total to 2,780), 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals as the Bulldogs defeated Madison 68-37. Over the two games, Langford was 27-of-50 from the floor, 7-of-18 from 3-point range and 23-of-25 from the line.
This is the 10th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the sixth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls’ winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 24. Boys’ winners will be chosen starting in three weeks and through the week following March 24.
