Kentucky’s Castell is Bronko Nagurski Trophy National Player of the Week

Oct. 20, 2026

DALLAS (FWAA) – Kentucky safety Jordan Castell picked off a pair of passes Saturday, returning the second for a touchdown in the final 90 seconds that sealed the Wildcats’ 21-13 win at Oklahoma. Those takeaways, plus nine tackles and a pass breakup, earned Castell the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for the weekend of Oct. 17 by the Football Writers Association of America.

Each week during the regular season, the FWAA has selected a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week since 2001. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2026 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 19. The national defensive player of the year will be chosen from those finalists who are part of the 2026 FWAA All-America Team and presented with the trophy at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on Dec. 7 at the Charlotte Convention Center, and the winner will also be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on ESPN on Dec. 11.

Both interceptions by Castell, a 6-foot-2, 211-pound senior from Orlando, Fla., were game-changers in the key road win, none bigger than the last one. Kentucky was hanging on with a 14-13 lead late in the fourth quarter but saw Oklahoma driving toward midfield with 1:30 left. Castell read an intended pass over the middle, stepped in front to make the interception, then veered to his left and outran the pursuit 41 yards to score his first collegiate touchdown, clinching the game that gave Kentucky its first three-game SEC win streak on the road since 2009.

The senior’s experience showed through in the second quarter as well as Oklahoma lined up for a field-goal attempt from the Wildcats’ 10-yard line. The Sooners faked the field goal attempt, instead attempting a pass into the end zone. Castell did not bite on the play, stayed with the intended receiver and grabbing his first interception of the game.

The SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week, Castell now leads the conference with four picks on the season. His interceptions were half of Kentucky’s four picks in the game, and the 4-0 turnover margin was key in the Wildcats holding Oklahoma (13 points) to half of its season scoring average (23.9) entering the contest.

Castell is tied for 15th among all active FBS players for career interceptions with seven. A sure tackler from his safety position, he ranks sixth in the SEC in tackles per game with 8.14 per outing.

Kentucky has won or tied the turnover battle in all seven games this season and its plus-11 turnover margin leads the SEC.

Castell is Kentucky’s second player to be honored as the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week since its origin in 2001, and the Wildcats’ first since cornerback Maxwell Hairston earned it in the fourth week of the 2023 season. Kentucky has one Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner in its past, linebacker Josh Allen from the 2018 season.

The Wildcats (6-1, 4-1 SEC), toting their best start to SEC play since 2021 and currently tied with Georgia for the SEC lead, host Vanderbilt (3-4, 0-4 SEC) at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday in a game broadcast on the SEC Network.

Players may be added or removed from the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list during the season. If a player isn’t already on the preseason watch list, including Castell this week, each week’s honored player is added at that time.

The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association’s full membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Bronko Nagurski Trophy finalists. The trophy winner will be chosen from the four finalists named in November. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner they regard as the best defensive player in college football.

The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football, then became a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw “Bronko” Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses college football’s most prestigious awards. The NCFAA’s 25 awards have honored nearly 1,000 recipients since 1935. Visit NCFAA.org for more information or follow on X at @NCFAA.
