Eastside senior headlines IBCA/Subway Players of the Week
Yoder scores 41 to attain honor; Key, Wilkerson, Carrothers, Bischoff and Scaggs also cited
Alex Yoder poured in 41 points in his only game of the week, and the Eastside High School senior leads the honorees in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Frankton senior Kayden Key, Princeton senior Stephan Wilkerson, Crown Point freshman Jessica Carrothers, Roncalli sophomore Maddie Bischoff and Mooresville senior Elise Scaggs join Yoder as recipients for the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 2 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Yoder is the boys’ winner and Carrothers is the girls’ winner for District 1. Key and Bischoff collected respective boys’ and girls’ honors for District 2. Wilkerson and Scaggs received accolades for District 3.
The 5-10 Yoder scored a school-record 41 points with six rebounds, five assists and four steals as the Eastside boys improved to 6-10 with a 97-52 triumph over Hamilton in their only game of the week. Yoder went 15-of-23 from the field, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, plus 5-of-7 on free throws en route to his big game. His output eclipsed the previous school record of 38 points by Charlie Ross from a game in the 1970-71 season.
Key totaled 28 points with seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in propelling the Frankton boys to a 77-71 victory over Hamilton Heights in their only game of the week. The 6-1 guard sank 10-of-18 shots, two 3-pointers, and 6-of-8 free throws as the Eagles improved to 16-3.
The 6-2 Wilkerson produced 35 points with seven rebounds, two assists and four steals in leading the Princeton boys past Mt. Vernon (Posey) 86-47 in their only game of the week. Wilkerson went 14-of-22 from the field, 6-of-12 from distance and 1-of-1 from the line as the Tigers moved their record to 15-3.
Carrothers averaged 26.5 points and 8.0 steals in keying the Crown Point girls to a pair of victories in the Lowell Sectional. The 5-7 guard opened with 22 points, eight rebounds, four assists and eight steals in a 77-28 victory over Lowell. She followed with 31 points, six rebounds, four assists and eight steals as the Bulldogs beat East Chicago Central 62-32. Over both games, Carrothers was 20-of-36 on field goals with one 3-pointers and 12-of-14 on free throws as Crown Point improved to 25-0.
The 5-9 Bischoff averaged 22.3 points over three games as the Roncalli girls finished as runner-up in the Southport Sectional. Bischoff opened with a career-high 39 points with one rebound and one steal in a 61-39 triumph over Pike. She followed with 16 points and two steals in a 69-46 decision over Southport. Bischoff tallied 12 points, a career-high 11 rebounds and three assists in a 52-50 setback to Ben Davis in the final. Over three games, she was 20-of-48 shooting, including 6-of-20 on 3-pointers, and 21-of-27 on free throws as the Rebels closed 16-7.
Scaggs averaged 27.0 points and 4.7 rebounds in keying the Mooresville girls to the championship of the Terre Haute South Sectional. The 5-11 forward opened with 21 points, five rebounds and two steals in a 63-59 victory over Plainfield. She followed with 31 points, four rebounds and two steals in a 65-50 triumph over Avon. Scaggs capped her week by scoring 29 points with five rebounds and one steal as the Pioneers (17-9) knocked off Brownsburg 57-52 for the sectional crown. Over three games, Scaggs sank 26-of-41 field goals, 1-of-2 3-pointers and 28-of-32 free throws.
This is the 11th season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the seventh season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its seventh season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”
Winners in the Player of the Week are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 23. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 23.
