Four boys, three girls cited as IBCA Players of the Week
Lambert pours in 45 points for Delta; Pumphrey posts three triple-doubles for Cambridge City
Delta senior Tanner Lambert set a school record with a 45-point outburst and Cambridge City Lincoln junior Garrett Pumphrey posted three triple-doubles in three games to headline the winners in this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program.
Tanner and Pumphrey are joined by Lowell senior Nick Mantis, Loogootee senior Tye Collins, Gary West senior Dana Evans, Ben Davis junior Nia Clark and North Decatur senior Olivia Seifert as honorees for Nov. 21-26 in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Mantis and Evans are respective boys’ and girls’ recipients for District 1. Lambert and Pumphrey shared the boys’ District 2 award, while Clark is the girls’ District 2 honoree. Collins and Seifert are the boys’ and girls’ honorees for District 3.
Lambert accounted for his school-record 45-point outburst to go with three rebounds and five assists in just three quarters as Delta knocked off Union City 83-37 in its season opener. The 6-0 guard converted 16-of-24 shots from the field, 10-of-15 3-pointers and 3-of-3 free throws to eclipse the Eagles’ previous mark of 41 points set by Rob Robbins in 1997.
Pumphrey averaged 18.7 points, 16.7 rebounds and 11.0 blocks in three victories for Cambridge City Lincoln. First, the 6-8 junior tallied 13 points, 16 rebounds and 12 blocked shots as the Golden Eagles defeated Wes-Del 75-63. Pumphrey followed with 21 points, 19 rebounds and 10 blocks in a 65-41 triumph over Anderson Prep. He completed his week with 22 points, 15 rebounds and 11 blocks in a 67-37 decision over Christel House Academy. Over three games, Pumphrey sank 23-of-42 field goals and 10-of-14 free throws.
The 6-4 Mantis scored 41 points as Lowell ran past Hanover Central 92-62 in its season opener. Mantis added four rebounds, five assists and five steals while shooting 16-of-21 from the field, 5-of-8 on 3-pointers and 4-of-6 on free throws for the Red Devils.
Collins averaged 23.0 points and 15.0 rebounds over two games in propelling Loogootee to the championship of the HBA/Stimulus Tipoff Classic. The 6-1 senior opened with 30 points, 20 rebounds, two assists and two steals as the Lions defeated Irvington Prep. Collins followed with 16 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 69-60 triumph over Rock Creek Academy for the championship. In two games, Collins was 17-of-32 from the floor and 12-of-16 on free throws.
The 5-6 Evans averaged 30.7 points over three games in a 2-1 week for the Gary West girls (4-1). The Louisville recruit opened with 32 points, nine rebounds, 11 assists and two steals in a 91-56 rout of Hammond. She dropped in 37 points with nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals in an 87-26 pasting of South Bend Washington. Evans netted 33 points with two rebounds, two assists and four steals but the Cougars lost 79-48 to Chicago Marshall. In three games, Evans was 43-of-81 from the field, 6-of-18 on 3-pointers and 10-of-12 from the line.
Clark averaged 24.5 points as Ben Davis won twice to improve to 7-1 for the season. The 5-9 guard scored 30 points with seven rebounds and six steals as the Giants defeated Perry Meridian 67-42. She then produced 19 points with four assists and two steals in a 63-25 runaway over Lawrence Central. In two games, Clark was 20-of-34 on field goals, 5-of-12 on 3-pointers and 4-of-4 on free throws.
The 5-11 Seifert averaged 31.0 points and 11.0 rebounds in a pair of victories for North Decatur (4-3). Seifert netted 35 points with 11 rebounds in a 72-46 decision over Edinburgh, making 17-of-18 field goals against the Lancers. She followed by scoring 27 points with 11 rebounds in a 66-48 victory at Knightstown. In two games, Seifert was 27-of-33 from the field and 8-of-11 from the line.
This is the ninth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the fifth season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its sixth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. Girls winners will be chosen from now through the week following Feb. 25. Boys winners will be chosen from now through the week following March 25.
