TERRE HAUTE, IND. — The Indiana State University men’s basketball team wrapped the non-conference schedule Tuesday with a hard-fought 72-66 victory over Southeast Missouri State in the Hulman Center.
Senior Tyreke Key led a balanced offensive attack for the Sycamores, dropping in 18 points to lead three players in double-figures for Indiana State. Joining the double-digit scoring was sophomore Jake LaRavia, who added 15 thanks to nine points at the charity stripe, and fellow sophomore Tre Williams, who added 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
With his 18 point performance, Key moved to No. 14 on Indiana State’s all-time scoring list with 1,323 points, passing Ray Goddard (1959-62).
Southeast Missouri junior guard Chris Miller led the Redhawks with 16 points.
The Sycamores controlled action from the jump, scoring the first two points of the game and never looking back. The ISU defense stifled the SEMO in the first half, limiting the visitors to just 32 percent (8-of-25) from the floor. Though the Redhawks recovered to make the game close in the second half, Indiana State prevailed.
For the game, ISU outshot SEMO from the floor, 43.5 percent (20-of-46) to 40.4 percent (21-of-52). While the Redhawks held the advantage from the three-point line, the Sycamores committed fewer turnovers (15 to 19), had more assists (10 to 7) and made more free throws than Southeast Missouri attempts (28 to 27).
The foul-riddled second half kept the game at a disjointed pace, but Indiana State was able to take advantage shooting 35 total free throws, connecting on 82% of them (28-of-35).
