Sycamore Volleyball Drops Season-Opening Match with Aces, 3-0

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Indiana State volleyball opened its season Monday afternoon inside the ISU Arena, falling to Evansville in straight sets, 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 25-27).

 

It was a tough offensive day for the Sycamores, hitting only .142 to Evansville’s .236. Junior Madeline Williams was the leader on offense, tallying 13 kills and hitting .360 to go along with two digs on defense. Overall, ISU ended with 45 kills.

Defensively the Trees and Aces were nearly identical when it came to digs with the edge going to the Aces, 69-68. Three Sycamores recorded double-digit digs: Melina Tedrow (15), Mary Hannah Lewis (13) and Ashley Eck (11).

The Aces won the battle at the net, recording eight blocks to Indiana State’s six.

 

First Set – Evansville 25, Indiana State 20

• Evansville jumped out to an 11-4 lead.
• The Sycamores struggled hitting in the first set, hitting .122 in the set compared to UE’s .281.
• Indiana State used a 9-4 run to get back into the set after being down as many as eight points.
• Errors plagued ISU in the frame as the Sycamores committed nine errors on 14 kills while the Aces recorded four errors on 13 kills.

Second Set: Evansville 25, Indiana State 23

• Indiana State continued to struggle in the second frame, hitting .173 to Evansville’s .278. The Sycamores came away with 17 kills in the set.
• Madeline Williams was the leader on the offensive side for ISU with five kills.
• Mary Hannah Lewis led ISU in assists with nine and earned one kill in the set.
• Melina Tedrow led the defensive effort with six digs.

Third Set: Evansville 27, Indiana State 25

• ISU battled to extra points as five Sycamores recorded kills in the set.
• Indiana State hit .127 in the set while UE recorded a .186 attacking percent.
• Tedrow put on a strong defensive performance with 10 digs to lead the team while Gretchen Kuckkan added seven digs.

 

Indiana State will travel to Evansville on Friday for a rematch with the Aces. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. from the Meeks Family Fieldhouse.
