COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Maryland men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon announced the program’s 2021-22 non-conference schedule Thursday, featuring a home matchup with former ACC foe Virginia Tech, a meeting with Florida at Barclays Center (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and a Thanksgiving trip to The Bahamas.

Game times and television designations will be announced at a later date.

As previously announced, Maryland will host Virginia Tech at XFINITY Center Wed., Dec. 1, in the Big Ten/ACC Men’s Basketball Challenge. Maryland’s matchup with Florida in Brooklyn will take place Sunday, Dec. 12, while the Terrapins will face veteran-laden Richmond in The Bahamas on Nov. 25 and either Louisville or Mississippi State on Nov. 27.

Maryland returns All-Big Ten guard Eric Ayala and starters Donta Scott and Hakim Hart, and added a number of impact transfers. Among the transfers are forward Qudus Wahab (Georgetown), who was rated the No. 3 overall transfer by CBSSports.com, and veteran guard Fatts Russell (Rhode Island).

Projected to be in the preseason top-25 rankings by virtually every national outlet, the 2021-22 Terrapins open the season Tuesday, Nov. 9, against Quinnipiac. It marks the first meeting in history between the programs.

The Quinnipiac matchup marks the start of a string of three games across five days at XFINITY to open the season, which also includes dates with George Washington (Thurs., Nov. 11) and Vermont (Sat., Nov. 13). Vermont tied for first in the America East Conference regular season last year.

Maryland then hosts George Mason (Wed., Nov. 17) and Hofstra (Fri., Nov. 19), before heading to The Bahamas for Thanksgiving break.

Following meetings with Virginia Tech and Florida, the Terps round out their non-conference schedule with matchups against Loyola (Md.) on Tues., Dec. 28, and Brown on Thurs., Dec. 30.

Men’s Basketball Adds 6-8 Grad Transfer Jalanni White

6-8 forward comes to Penn State after undergraduate career at Canisius

 

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State men’s basketball head coach Micah Shrewsberry has announced the addition of Jalanni White to the Nittany Lion program. White, a 6-8 forward, comes to Happy Valley as a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility remaining after a four-year career at Canisius.

 

“We are excited that Jalanni decided to join our family,” said Shrewsberry. “He is an experienced player who will fit in nicely with our current group. His toughness, skill, length and athleticism will help us become a better team on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.”

 

White, a New Haven, Conn. native, saw action in 98 games and made 50 starts throughout his career with the Golden Griffins. He owns a 50.5 percent career field goal percentage, with career marks of 5.1 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.

 

White started all 11 games he played as a senior in a Covid-19 shortened 2020-21 season, after starting 30 contests during his junior campaign. The forward averaged 7.0 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 54.2 percent from the field, a mark that ranked eighth-best in Canisius single-season history, during the 2019-20 season.

 

He earned MAAC All-Championship Team honors as a sophomore after averaging 13.5 points sand 5.0 rebounds per contest in two MAAC Tournament games, including a perfect 7-for-7 effort from the field in the Golden Griffins’ quarterfinal contest. White made an immediate impact upon arrival as a freshman in 2017-18, becoming the first true freshman front court player to start a season opener for Canisius in 10 years.

 

White attended Notre Dame-West Haven High School in Connecticut where he helped lead his team to the school’s first-ever undefeated season (22-0) in 2016-17 while averaging 12.1 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game as an All-Area and All-Conference performer.

Ohio State Will Travel to Syracuse for Big Ten/ACC Challenge

The Buckeyes and Orange will face off on December 1 in the 14^th annual challenge between the two conferences. 

 

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State is scheduled to travel to Syracuse on Wednesday, Dec. 1 for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge as the matchups for the 14^th annual competition were announced on Tuesday.

 

The Big Ten/ACC Challenge most recently took place in 2019 with the Big Ten beating the ACC by a 9-5 margin. The Buckeyes earned a 67-60 victory over No. 2 Louisville. This was the program’s 13^th win all-time over a top-five team and its first win over the Cardinals.

 

Ohio State is 4-9 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with the first three games coming against top-10 opponents. The Buckeyes are currently on a two-game win streak, beating North Carolina by a 76-69 margin in 2018 before earning the victory against No. 2 Louisville in 2019. Ohio State won its first game in the challenge against Virginia in 2010, beating the Cavaliers by a 74-46 margin.

 

Game times, as well as television and streaming video coverage, for the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Women’s Basketball Challenge will be announced at a later date. All Big Ten home games in this year’s Challenge will appear on either the Big Ten Network (BTN), Big Ten Network+ or one of the ESPN networks, while ACC home games in the Challenge will be shown on either the ACC Network, ACC Network Extra or one of the ESPN networks.

Illini To Host Florida State for Big Ten/ACC Challenge

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Fighting Illini women’s basketball team will host the Florida State Seminoles at State Farm Center in the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Women’s Basketball Challenge, as jointly announced Tuesday (Aug. 3) by Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conferences.

The matchup, slated for Thursday, Dec. 2, will mark just the second meeting in the series between the Illini and the Seminoles. FSU captured the first contest, 78-66, in a neutral-court battle played Dec. 7, 1990 in Charlottesville, Va., as part of the Cavalier Classic tournament.

Women’s Basketball announces non-conference schedule

Five 2021 post-season teams highlight competition

 MADISON, Wis. – Five post-season teams from the season highlight the 2021-22 non-conference schedule of the 2020-21 Wisconsin women’s basketball team, first-year head coach Marisa Moseley announced on Tuesday.

“I am thrilled to release our 2021-22 non-conference schedule,” Moseley said. “This slate of games features a great mix of local rivalries and regional foes. Highlighted by our Thanksgiving trip to Colorado as well as the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge where we host a talented Virginia Tech team, these games will be a great test for our young team. I have confidence our schedule enables our team to build a solid foundation in preparation for an exciting and competitive Big Ten season.”

 

The Badgers play Virginia Tech in the 14th Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Dec. 1 in the Kohl Center. The Hokies were 15-10 in 2020-21, advancing to the second round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Wisconsin will also play at Bradley (17-12 in 2020-21) on Nov. 19, which lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

 

Three WNIT teams from 2020-21 will challenge the Badgers, including in-state rival Milwaukee (20-8). The Panthers shared the Horizon League regular-season title at 15-5 and advanced to the second-round of the WNIT. Wisconsin travels to Milwaukee on Nov. 24.

 

Wisconsin heads to the Colorado Invitational in Boulder, Colorado, on Nov. 27-28, facing off against Boise State (14-9) and host Colorado (12-11) in the tournament. The Buffs lost in the third round of the WNIT tournament.

 

The final WNIT team is Illinois State (16-9), which will come to the Kohl Center on Dec. 16. The Redbirds advanced to third round of the tournament.

 

The Badgers will play a total of seven home games during the 2021-22 non-conference season. Fans will have a chance to see in-state rival Green Bay on Dec. 12 as well as regional foes St. Thomas (Minnesota) on Nov. 10, Chicago State on Nov. 22, and Eastern Illinois on Dec. 23.

Women’s Basketball Matched With Pittsburgh in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

Scarlet Knights’ first game with the Panthers since 2012 will take place on Dec. 1 in Pittsburgh

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The 2021-22 Rutgers women’s basketball schedule continues to take shape with a Wednesday, December 1 matchup at Pittsburgh in the 14th Big Ten/ACC Challenge, announced by the conference offices on Tuesday.

The last time the Challenge was played in 2019, Rutgers contributed a 73-63 win over Virginia at the RAC as the Big Ten earned its first victory over the ACC by a 9-5 margin. As has been the case in recent years, the vast majority of the 2019 Challenge games were remarkably close, with 10 of the 14 contests decided by 10 points or fewer. The Challenge was not played during the 2020-21 season.

The Scarlet Knights and the Panthers last met in 2012, when Rutgers and Pittsburgh were both members of the Big East. RU won its final three games against Pitt, 16 of its last 17 dating back to 1998, and boast a 26-3 overall record since the series began in 1978.

Rutgers has a 2-4 record in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with wins over Virginia (2019) and NC State (2017), and losses to Virginia Tech (2018), Duke (2016), Florida State (2015) and North Carolina (2014).

The early look at the 2021-22 slate now has four games. The Pittsburgh game joins the three games announced as part of the Island Tournament at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which pits Rutgers against DePaul (Nov. 25), Vanderbilt (Nov. 26), and Arizona (Nov. 27). The remainder of the 2021-22 schedule will be announced later this summer.

Hawkeyes Draw Blue Devils in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team heads to Durham, North Carolina, to take on Duke on Thursday, Dec. 2, as part of the 2021 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. It marks the pair’s second matchup.

The Big Ten and ACC offices collaborate to determine the challenge schedule each season. The Big Ten and ACC have been among the most competitive conferences on the national women’s basketball landscape for many years, with the two conferences sending 15 schools to the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21.

The Big Ten won the 2019 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, 9-5. Iowa defeated Princeton, 77-75, in overtime, posting the Tiger’s sole loss of the 2019-2020 season.

Illini Freshman Oden Named Top Player in Maryland

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini incoming freshman guard Jayla Oden has been selected as the top player in her home state of Maryland as part of USA Today’s annual High School Sports Awards.

The Maryland High School Sports Awards recognize the best athletes in the state in each of 17 sanctioned sports, with Oden, from Baltimore, earning the honor as the top Female Basketball Player for 2021.

Oden was a two-sport standout during her time at the McDonogh School where she lettered three years in basketball and once in track & field. On the court, she averaged more than 15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals per game, and earned nominations as a senior for both the McDonald’s All-America team and Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year.

Local, regional and statewide winners from across the country, including Oden, are now eligible for the national awards which will be presented as part of the USA Today High School Sports Awards show.
