Minnesota and Ohio State Earn Weekly Women’s Basketball Awards

Minnesota’s Destiny Pitts and Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell are this week’s honorees

 

Player of the Week

Kelsey Mitchell, Ohio State

G – Sr. – Cincinnati, Ohio – Princeton

• Posted 29.0 points, 4.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game with a .412 three-point percentage to help Ohio State remain unbeaten in Big Ten play with two wins last week

• Scored a season-high 37 points in Sunday’s overtime victory at Michigan, including 27 points in the second half and overtime en route to her seventh 30-point game of the season

• Needs two points to become the second Big Ten student and 13th NCAA Division I women’s basketball student to score 3,000 career points

• Collected Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016 and 2017

• Earns her 11th career Player of the Week honor (third of the season), the fourth-most career Player of the Week awards in Big Ten history

Big Ten Women’s Basketball Weekly Honor Roll

Tyra Buss, Sr., G, IND: Registered 23.0 points, 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game last week and broke Indiana’s 34-year-old career scoring record (now 1,950 points) as the Hoosiers split two Big Ten games

Megan Gustafson, Jr., F/C, IOWA: Averaged 24.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game with two double-doubles and a .680 field-goal percentage to help the Hawkeyes to a 1-1 week in Big Ten play

Hallie Thome, Jr., C, MICH: Collected 23.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game with a .625 field-goal percentage during the Wolverines’ two conference games last week

 

Freshman of the Week

Destiny Pitts, Minnesota

G/F – Detroit, Mich. – Detroit Country Day

• Averaged 18.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game with a .474 three-point percentage last week, as the Golden Gophers picked up a win at home over Michigan State after a road defeat at Ohio State

• Scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds in last Thursday’s loss at OSU, connecting on 7-of-15 three-point attempts

• Added eight points and four rebounds in Sunday’s win over MSU

• Earns her fifth career Freshman of the Week honor

Maryland, Ohio State Earn Weekly Men’s Basketball Honors

Buckeyes’ Keita Bates-Diop earns Player of the Week award; Terrapins’ Bruno Fernando named Freshman of the Week

 

Player of the Week

Keita Bates-Diop, Ohio State

F – Jr. – 6-7 – Normal, Ill. – University High

  • Averaged 29.5 points, 10.0 rebounds in 34.5 minutes per game and went 22-of-38 (.579) from the field in two wins last week
  • Scored a career-high 32 points to lead unranked Ohio State to an 80-64 win over No. 1 Michigan State at Value City Arena on Sunday
  • Started the week with a double-double in a 92-81 win at Iowa with 27 points on 10-of-17 (.588) shooting from the field and 13 rebounds
  • Added four steals and blocked four shots during the week
  • Earns his second career Big Ten Player of the Week honor
  • Last Ohio State Player of the Week: Keita Bates-Diop (Dec. 11, 2017; Prior: D’Angelo Russell on Feb. 9, 2015)

Freshman of the Week

Bruno Fernando, Maryland

F – 6-10 – Luanda, Angola – IMG Academy

  • Averaged 15 points, 8.3 rebounds in 29.7 minutes per game and went 17-of-31 (.548) from the field, helping the Terrapins go 2-1 in conference action on the week
  • Scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-11 (.727) shooting from the field in a 91-73 win vs. Iowa and added second rebounds and two assists
  • Posted a double-double in a 75-69 win against Penn State with 17 points and 11 rebounds (career high) to start the week
  • Earns his first career Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor
