Boilers Top SIUE in Opener

On a crisp, alright cold evening in West Lafayette, Indiana, 13,934 paying customers filed into Mackey Arena to get a glimpse of the Boilers minus Caleb Swanigan.

Swanigan of course is now playing Pro Ball, while the balance of last year’s team opened up the season for Matt Painter’s Boilermakers with the season opener against SIU Edwardsville.

Matt Painter would leave the game feeling good about his team, but knowing there is a lot more work to do before the BiG Ten season gets underway.

Two of his concerns will be the 24 offensive rebounds given up and the Boilers over-all mental toughness.

Over-all Purdue shot the ball well, as they hit on 36 of 61 attempts for a pleasing 59% percent from the floor.

That included a four of eight night from Middletown, Ohio Senior Vince Edwards, a five of six from the floor for senior Isaac Haas, five of seven from 7’3 redshirt freshman from Amsterdam, Netherlands, Matt Haarms, five of eleven from Texas sophomore guard Carsen Edwards and a solid night for Eldorado, Ohio senior Dakota Mathias as he hit five of eight from the floor and a perfect six of six from the line.

Painter got some solid effort from his bench as Fort Wayne, Indiana junior Grady Eifert was a perfect four of four from the field and Evanston, Illinois freshman Nojel Eastern hit on three of four from the floor and added eight assists in 21 minutes.

Brebeuf Jesuit graduate senior P J Thompson score six points with three assists, two steals and one turnover in 23 minutes of floor time.

For Edwardsville a fine over-all performance from junior Daniel Kinchen as he scored 17 points, Julian Torres, a redshirt sophomore Bollingbrook, Illinois scored 20 points included a strong second half performance as 18 of his points came after the intermission and Justin Benton’s 15 points and six assists.
