The Indiana Hoosiers won their first true road game of the season Wednesday Night as they beat the Maryland Terrapins 84-66 at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland. Indiana is 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Indiana is 2-3 away from Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and 1-2 in true road games this season. Maryland is 7-8 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten and lost five of their last six games and 3-4 at home this season. Indiana leads the all-time series 15-10 and 10-8 as Big Ten Conference Opponents and have won two straight at the Xfinity Center.
The Hoosiers put four in double figures with Lamar Wilkerson leading the way with 24 points, Tayton Conerway added 19 points. Conor Enright added 16 and Reed Bailey scored 15 off the bench. The Hoosiers went with an eight-player rotation as Tucker DeVries scored 5 points, Trent Sisley scored 3 points, Sam Alexis had 2 points, and 3 Rebounds and Nick Dorn did not score. The Hoosiers finished the game 27-60 from the field for 45%, 8-25 from three-point range for 32% and 22-26 at the free throw line for 84%. The Hoosiers pulled down 41 rebounds, dished out 13 assists, 3 steals, no blocks and 11 turnovers.
Elijah Saunders led Maryland with 16 points. Solomon Washington scored 14 points and pulled down 9 rebounds Terrapins. Daruis Adams scored 13 points, David Coit added 11 points and Andre Mills scored 10 points. Former Hoosier Myles Rice scored 2 points in 15 minutes off the bench. Rice went 1-3 from the field, 0-1 from three-point range, a rebound and a steal. Maryland finished 25-61 from the field for 61%, 5-26 from three-point range for 19% and 11-17 from the free throw line for 64%. The Terps pulled down 33 rebounds, dished out 7 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks and 11 turnovers.
Maryland was in the game for the first half as the Hoosiers struggled to hit shots, but the Terps could not take advantage since they were not converting their shots especially inside. Indiana was able to settle down and lead 38-31 at halftime. Indiana started hitting from outside and Maryland fell apart defensively as the Hoosiers were scoring in bunches 48-35 in the second half. The Hoosiers were able to pull away in the second half and come away with a much-needed road win in a tough Big Ten where it’s never easy to win on the road and need conference road wins, when possible, to build their NCAA Tournament Resume.
The Hoosiers return home to face an unbeaten Nebraska team at noon on Saturday in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Nebraska has had awesome season so far, but Indiana is 10-0 at home and could play the role of spoiler on Saturday. But Indiana Head Coach Darian DeVries has his first Big Ten Conference Road win since taking over the Hoosiers and now comes another big test on Saturday afternoon when Unbeaten Nebraska comes to Bloomington and Its all already a huge week in Bloomington with the Football Team getting ready to play Oregon in the College Football Playoff Semifinals in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta Friday Night. A win over Nebraska Saturday would be the icing on the cake if the Hoosiers win on Friday night and the dream season will continue for Curt Cignetti and the Hosoiers.
