The Maxwell Football Club (MFC), home to several of college football’s most prestigious awards including the Maxwell, Chuck Bednarik and George Munger awards, proudly announces that Willie Jeffries has been selected as the recipient of the Club’s inaugural HBCU Contributions to Football Award, which will be presented annually to an outstanding contributor from a historically black college, athletic department, football program or conference.
In a career that spanned 20 years, Jeffries served as the head coach at several institutions, most notably at South Carolina State University (SCSU) from 1973 to 1978 and again from 1989 to 2001. His coaching resume also included stops at Howard University, and Wichita State where he was the first African American Head Coach at a Division 1-A football program.
On the field Jeffries Led SCSU to 7 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championships during his tenure. He finished his career with a notable win-loss record of 180 wins, 132 losses, and 6 ties. His tenure at SCSU particularly stands out, where he had a winning percentage of over 60% and his teams made several appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Jeffries developed numerous players who went on to successful careers in the NFL and other professional leagues.
Coach Jeffries’ legacy off the field is equally impressive. He served as a mentor to many young coaches and players, promoting education, character development, and sportsmanship. Jeffries also actively promoted diversity and inclusion within collegiate athletics, paving the way and providing opportunities for future generations. His contributions have led to his induction in the College Football, MEAC, South Carolina State University and Black College Football Halls of Fame. Jeffries was also presented with the Order of the Palmetto and the Order of the Silver Crescent which are the two highest civilian honors in the state of South Carolina and which honor significant statewide impact.
