Spartans Pull Away for Win

Suzy Merchant’s Michigan State Spartans found themselves in a fight as they held a one point lead 39 to 38 going into the final minutes of the third quarter.    A Spartan onslaught saw them out score Northwestern 29 to 14 for the remainder of the opening game at the 2019 BiG Ten Women’s basketball tournament at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse.

In securing the Spartans 20th over-all win they were led by a foursome of scorers that included Shay Colley’s 14, Nia Clouden and Bedford North Lawrence graduate Jenna Allen’s 11 a piece and East Lansing, Michigan sharp-shooter Taryn McCutcheon’s ten.

Merrillville, Indiana redshirt junior Victoria Gaines led the team in assists with five while Colley pulled down seven boards.

The Spartans move on to play number one seed Maryland tomorrow at noon.

Northwestern ended their respective season at sixteen wins and fourteen losses.

The Cats  were led by Greenwich, Connecticut junior Abbie Wolf’s 15 followed by 11 from Northwestern’s lone senior Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah’s 11 and Newton, Massachusetts native Veronica Burton’s ten.

Burton and Kunaiyi-Akpanah led the team with eight rebounds a piece.
