Terps Drop Regular-Season Finale, 66-61, To Penn State

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Penn State outscored Maryland 30-11 to close the game on the way to a 66-61 victory in the regular-season finale in the Big Ten Conference on Sunday night. The Terps (15-12, 9-11 Big Ten) will head into the Big Ten Tournament as the #8 seed and will face #9 Michigan State on Thursday at 11:30 a.m., on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Sports Network.
Aaron Wiggins posted his fifth double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Eric Ayala added 14 points.
Seth Lundy led Penn State (10-13, 7-12) with 31 points. Lundy (17) and Myreon Jones (14) combined for 31 of Penn State’s 43 second-half points. Jones was Penn State’s other double-figure scorer with 17 points.
Maryland held a 50-36 lead with 11:24 left in the game, as Donta Scott’s back-to-back 3-pointers capped an 11-0 run for the Terps. Penn State answered the run with 11 consecutive points of its own to draw within 50-47 with 6:36 left.
Ayala’s pair of free throws with 2:51 left put Maryland ahead 57-51. The Nittany Lions scored the next 12 points in a row – with eight coming from Lundy – to grab a lead they would never relinquish.
Penn State controlled the glass, outrebounding Maryland, 39-31, and limited the Terps to one offensive rebound. The Nittany Lions were also solid at the line in the second half, making 18-of-20 for 90 percent.
On Senior Night, senior Darryl Morsell tallied 10 points. Fellow seniors Galin Smith and Reese Mona drew starts as well, playing in front of their parents at Xfinity Center for the first time this season. The Terps scored the game’s first 12 points.
Penn State will be the #11 seed and play #14 seed Nebraska on Wednesday at 9 p.m.
