Illinois and Minnesota Earn Big Ten Weekly Women’s Basketball Awards

Fighting Illini’s Kennedi Myles and Golden Gophers’ Destiny Pitts are this week’s honorees

 

Player of the Week

Destiny Pitts, Minnesota

G/F – Jr. – Detroit, Mich. – Detroit Country Day – Major: Management Information Systems

• Averaged 21.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game last week to help the Golden Gophers extend their winning streak to nine games with victories over George Washington and UC Davis

• Registered 20 points, six rebounds and a career high-tying seven assists on Dec. 10 at George Washington

• Finished with 22 points and a season-high nine rebounds in Sunday’s win over UC Davis

• Named an Academic All-Big Ten selection in 2018-19

• Earns her first Big Ten Player of the Week award

• Last Minnesota Player of the Week: Taiye Bello (Dec. 9, 2019)

Makenzie Meyer, Sr., G, IOWA: Averaged 18.5 ppg., 3.5 rpg. and 3.5 apg. with a .632 field-goal percentage last week in the Hawkeyes’ win over in-state rival Iowa State and North Carolina Central

Sam Haiby, So., G, NEB: Recorded 20 points, five rebounds and a career-high four steals in the Huskers’ Dec. 14 victory over Oral Roberts

 

Freshman of the Week

Kennedi Myles, Illinois

F – Cincinnati, Ohio – Walnut Hills – Major: Recreation, Sport and Tourism

• Averaged 15.5 points and 16.0 rebounds per game with a double-double last week as Illinois improved to 8-2 this season with wins over Merrimack and Evansville

• Grabbed an Illinois freshman record 20 rebounds in Sunday’s win over Evansville, breaking the previous school freshman record of 18 rebounds set twice during the 1975-76 season

• Posted 23 points and 12 rebounds in a Dec. 10 win over Merrimack

• Collects her first Freshman of the Week award
