13th Seed Rutgers Rips 12th Seed Penn State 75 to 50

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights started the game slow as Penn State scored the first six points of the game before a Rutgers time out. The damage was done by McKenna Marisa, McMurry, Pennsylvania Junior and Leilani Kapinus, a redshirt freshman from Madison Wisconsin.

Rutgers then mounted an impressive 12 run of their own to take the lead behind red-shirt Junior Tyia Singleton, Winter Haven, Florida and Shug Dickson, a St. Louis, Missouri graduate student and the inside play of Chillicothe, Ohio grad student Osh Brown.

At the end of the first stanza, Rutgers was up by six at 17 to 11. Both teams produced 14 points apiece in the second stanza to go to the break at 31 to 25.

Rutgers opened up the third quarter with a twelve to two run to open up a sizeable distance over Penn State while the Nittany Lions went cold from the field.

Rutgers continued with solid play throughout the third period with team play as the found open teammates and swelled the lead to 18 at 54 to 36.

Rutgers substituted liberally in the fourth quarter and even enlarged their lead to the finish line.

Rutgers was led in scoring by: Oshlin Brown with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Shug Dickson 14 with nine assists and Tyia Singleton with ten points and seven rebounds. Sayawni Lassiter added seven while Victoria Morris added seven.

Penn State was led in scoring by: Leilani Kapinus’ 16 points and 13 rebounds and Makenna Marisa’s 15.

Rutgers out-rebounded Ilinois 54 to 32 and recorded 18 team assists to eight for Penn State.

Rutgers moves on to play fifth seeded Indiana tomorrow.
