KEY, LARAVIA, AND WILLIAMS EARN ALL-MVC HONORS

SAINT LOUIS – For the first time in program history, the Indiana State men’s basketball team has had at least three different student-athletes honored by the Missouri Valley Conference with all-league honors in back-to-back seasons. Senior Tyreke Key was named All-MVC First Team, sophomore Jake LaRavia earned All-MVC Second Team, and sophomore Tre Williams was tabbed MVC All-Defensive team the league office announced Tuesday, March 2.

Key (First Team), Jordan Barnes (Second Team), Christian Williams (All-Defensive), and LaRavia (All-Freshman/All-Newcomer) all earned honors following the 2019-20 campaign.

 

Tyreke Key’s nod to the All-MVC First Team marked back-to-back seasons the Celina, Tenn. native earned the honor. In earning the first team nod, Key becomes the first Indiana State men’s basketball player since Jake Odum to earn back-to-back All-MVC First Team nods. The guard is one of only three players to be named to three All-MVC teams in their careers, joining Odum and ISU legend John Sherman Williams (All-MVC Second Team 2x, All-MVC First Team 2x). Key averaged 17.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game on the season, and an even more impressive 18.6 points per game in Valley play. He’s also currently No. 6 on the all-time Indiana State scoring list with 1,620 career points.

 

As a member of the All-MVC Second Team, Jake LaRavia continues to show his development after being a member of both the All-Freshman and All-Newcomer team a season ago. The Indianapolis, Ind. native averaged 12.5 points and tied for the team-high in rebounding at 6.1 boards per game, while averaging 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds in Valley play. With Key and LaRavia earning first and second team honors, it marked the first time since the 2000-01 season that Sycamore teammate earned All-Valley first and second team distinctions (Matt Renn – First Team; Michael Menser – Second Team).

 

Sophomore Tre Williams was a defensive force all season, leading the league in blocked shots per game (1.4) and total blocks (34). The Reynoldsburg, Ohio native also averaged 9.0 points and 6.1 rebounds on the season, shooting a team-best .528 from the floor. It marks the first time Indiana State has had back-to-back season of players on the MVC All-Defensive team (joining Williams from 2019-20) since Harry Marshall and Jake Odum accomplished the feat in 2009-10 and 2010-11, respectively.

 

More awards are to be announced from the Valley in due time, as the league’s beat writers’ selections for the All-Bench and Most Improved teams will be announced Wednesday, March 2, and Coach of the Year and All-Scholar teams are announced Thursday, March 3.
