Texas Edges Iowa State In Overtime, 84-82

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Texas (18-8, 11-7 Big 12) made 7-of-8 free-throws in the final 30 seconds in overtime to hold on and defeat Iowa State (16-10, 12-6 Big 12), 84-82, Friday in the quarterfinals of the Phillips 66 Women’s Basketball Championship in Kansas City, Mo.
The Longhorns took an early lead in the overtime period, but the Cyclones kept fighting. Kylie Feuerbach drained a 3-pointer with :28 seconds left to trim the UT lead to 77-76. Ashley Joens later buried a 3-pointer followed by an Emily Ryan bomb with 4.5 seconds left to make it a 83-82 UT advantage.
Kyra Lambert made 1-of-2 shots at the charity stripe, giving the Cyclones one last chance, but Joens’ desperation shot was after the buzzer sounded.
There were 15 lead changes in the tightly-contested game, but the Longhorns’ ability to make their free-throws down the stretch proved to be the deciding factor. ISU made 57 percent of its shots from the field to UT’s 38 percent, but ISU turned the ball over 18 times to UT’s six.
Joens had another incredible outing, pouring in 28 points (10-16 FG) and grabbing 14 boards en route to her 12th double-double of the season. Emily Ryan added 19 points and six dimes, while Kristin Scott chipped in with 13 points.
Lambert led the Longhorns with 23 points, connecting on 6-of-12 shots from beyond the arc.
Iowa State led 19-18 at the end of the first quarter and maintained its lead at the midway point of the second period. The Cyclones received a boost from the bench from Morgan Kane, who scored four points and grabbed five boards in eight minutes of work in the first half.
The Longhorns ended the half on a 7-0 run to take a 32-27 lead despite making just 29 percent of their shots. Joens had nine points and nine boards in the first half.
UT stretched its lead to eight points early in the third quarter, but Joens recorded back-to-back conventional 3-point plays on nifty post moves to knot the game at 39-all with 6:24 left in the period.
The Longhorns bounced back with a 10-0 run to move back in in control at 51-42 before Ryan buried a trey right before the buzzer to cut the lead to 51-45 going into the fourth period.
Scott kept the Cyclones within striking distance early in the fourth quarter by burying a couple of 3-pointers, as Iowa State pulled ahead at 59-58 with a Ryan layup with four minutes remaining in regulation.
Joens kept the Cyclones on top (66-65) with a layup with two minutes left, but Ashley Chevalier made a jumper with a minute remaining to push the Longhorns out in front at 69-67. Joens then added a pair of free-throws to tie the game and Allen-Taylor missed on a drive to send the game into overtime.
