Morristown To Much for Southwood

In the state capital of Indianapolis, the snow was pouring down like a spring rain, but inside Banker’s Life Fieldhouse, Morristown, who was making only their second appearance in the finals, the other being in 1911; traded baskets early with Southwood’s Knights, in particular the Knight’s Peyton Trexler, 6′ Senior who opened the game with the first five points for the Knights, in fact, there were five lead changes during the game and all came in the first quarter of play.

The Yellow Jackets led at the end of one 21-17 behind the shooting of Eli Streeval, 6′ Senior and Logan Laster, 6′ Junior. In fact, Streeval was four out of five and Laster’s three of four from the field.

Halftime saw the Yellow Jackets open a 38 to 29 lead behind yet again the duo of Streeval (7 of 8 from two point range, two of three behind the arc) 16 points and Laster (6 of 9 from two point range, two of three behind the arc) for 14 points.

Southwood’s scoring was spread around by Trexler’s nine, Matthew Nose’s eight and 6′ Senior Carson Blair’s seven.

Blair, the high scoring guard and Morristown’s Hayden Langkabel, another high scorer were both having off days shooting as Blair was just three out twelve from the floor including one of seven from three point land but Langkabel had collected five boards and three assists at the break.

The third quarter saw the Yellow Jackets pull away from Southwood with a 27-18 advantage.

Streeval and Laster continued their blitz of scoring, Langkabel kept doing the role playing and Trevon Carlton, 6’2 Sophomore getting in the action as he ended three stanzas with five of eight for ten points.

Trexler led the Knight’s with 18 points while Nose added twelve.

Morristown outscored Southwood 24-13 to claim their first championship 89-60.

Eli Streeval topped Morristown scoring with 35, just four off the record for a 1A game (both Zane Bowman, Barr Reeve and Brock Graves, Rossville) collected 37 a piece in the classic Barr Reeve-Rossville state championship game in 2002.

Logan Laster’s efforts were none the less as the posted a triple-double with 24 points, 13 rebounds and ten assists for the game.

Hayden Langkabel delivered a double-double with a game high 14 rebounds with sixteen points and six assists.

Carlton would add 12 points, six rebounds as the sophomore was cool under pressure.

Southwood was led by Trexler’s 18 and Nose’s 12 with 6’4 Junior Dallas Holmes ten points, eight rebounds, four blocks and four steals in 30 minutes.

Carson Blair was the Ray Craft Mental Attitude Award for the Class 1A game.
