Michigan 2020 Academic All-Big Ten Teams

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Big Ten Conference office released its fall 2020 Academic All-Big Ten teams on Thursday (Dec. 10), with the University of Michigan setting a record with 148 student-athletes on the honored list, eclipsing the previous record of 124 set in 2018.

Criteria for making the Academic All-Big Ten team include being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

The breakdown of the 149 Michigan student-athletes on the list is 15 from field hockey, 50 from football, 14 from men’s cross country, 22 from women’s cross country, 19 from men’s soccer, 20 from women’s soccer and eight from volleyball. Michigan has seen a dramatic increase since 2009, when the total was 41 honorees.

Michigan’s total of 149 Academic All-Big Ten selections were second most in the conference behind Northwestern’s 154.

The Big Ten also recognizes student-athletes with a GPA of 4.0 or higher with four student-athletes from Michigan hitting the mark. The four are sophomore Ren Hefley (football), graduate student Carlo Kemp (football), junior Gabe Mudel (men’s cross country) and senior Alice Hill (women’s cross country).

The conference office also awards Academic All-Big Ten distinction in the winter and spring seasons, and the Distinguished Scholar Award at the end of the academic year. Student-athletes eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award must be letterwinners in at least their second year in residence at their institution. Qualifying student-athletes must have earned a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school.
