WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Trevion Williams and Brandon Newman have been named the Big Ten’s Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.

It marks the first time in school history that Purdue has won both of the awards in the same week. Williams shares the Player of the Week honors with Minnesota center Liam Robbins.

Williams, who was named Player of the Week for the second time in his career, averaged 17.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in two Purdue victories during the week. He scored 22 points with 10 rebounds and two assists in a win over Indiana on Thursday, then added 13 points and 11 rebounds in just 19 minutes on Sunday against Penn State. He tallied 35 points, 21 rebounds and three assists in just 51 minutes of action.

His five double-doubles rank third in the Big Ten 17th nationally. He ranks 12th in the Big Ten in scoring at 15.3 points per game and is second in rebounding at 9.7 per game. He is the only high-major player in America averaging at least 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.

Meanwhile, Newman becomes the third Purdue freshman to be named Freshman of the Week, joining teammates Zach Edey and Mason Gillis as recipients. In fact, only four freshmen have earned the award this year as Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson has won the award five times, in addition to the three Purdue rookies.

Newman averaged 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 assists per game in the Boilermaker victories. He scored 12 points with six rebounds and two steals against Indiana, then added 13 points, five rebounds and three blocked shots vs. Penn State. He has also become one of Purdue’s top perimeter defenders, holding his two assignments to 6-of-25 shooting during the week.

Newman ranks second among Big Ten freshmen in scoring (9.7 PPG) and 3-pointers (23), while also contributing 3.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

The Boilermakers travel to Ohio State on Tuesday.
