INDIANAPOLIS (USBWA) – Zevi Samet of Yeshiva University (New York, N.Y.) and Madi Zancan of Regis College (Weston, Mass.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the period ending Feb. 1.

Samet, a 6-2 senior guard from Monsey, N.Y., rewrote the record books in leading Yeshiva to a pair of conference victories last week. In the Maccabees’ 76-47 victory over St. Joseph’s–Long Island on Wednesday, he scored 35 points (15-of-22 FG, 1-of-1 FT, 4-of-8 3FG) while also totaling three rebounds, an assist and two blocks. Then on Saturday, he pumped in a school-record 52 points (18-of-26 FG, 6-of-6 FT, 10-of-15 3FG), the highest total in NCAA Division III or Division II this season and only one off the 53 scored by Dennis Parker Jr., of Radford in Division I. Samet added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals in the 110-72 victory over Merchant Marine Academy. For the week, he averaged 43.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.5 steals while shooting 68.8 percent (33-of-48) from the field, 100 percent (7-of-7) from the foul line and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from three-point range. For his efforts, Samet was also named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II/III Player of the Week and the Skyline Conference Player of the Week.

Zancan, a 5-9 senior forward from Cumberland, R.I., produced a pair of 20-20 games as Regis knocked off a pair of conference opponents. She finished with 27 points (11-of-21 FG, 5-of-6 FT), a career-high 20 rebounds, two assists, six steals and two blocks in the Pride’s 79-61 win over Mitchell on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, Zancan scored 14 of her 32 points (12-of-17 FG, 8-of-8 FT) in the fourth quarter as Regis held off Norwich, 82-77. She scored the team’s final 10 points, including the tie-breaking layup with 1:08 remaining. Zancan also had 20 rebounds, two assists, four steals, and two blocks in the game. For the week, she averaged 29.5 points, 20.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 5.0 steals and 2.0 blocks while shooting 60.5 percent (23-of-38) from the field and 92.9 percent (13-of-14) from the foul line. For her efforts, Zancan was also selected the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week.

Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men’s and women’s Division III National Players of the Week. This is the 11th season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.
