Tecumseh defeated Class A’s top ranked team in their 54-42 win over Waldron in last week’s Semi State. One week earlier, the Braves beat the #2 team – Lanesville – 47-46 in the Regional Championship game.

Saturday in Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Tecumseh successfully completed a rare trifecta when they beat #3 Lafayette Central Catholic 60-53.

Coach Adam Lubbehusen’s Braves survived shooting 10-22 from the free throw line for the game – including 4 of 13 in the fourth quarter – which allowed three-time State Champion LCC to hang around. Lubbehusen was a key reserve guard for Tecumseh when the Braves boys’ basketball team also beat Lafayette Central Catholic in the Class A State Championship Game in 1999.
This is the first state title for Tecumseh in girls’ basketball.

Tecumseh junior guard Karsyn Flowers hit two free throws with 57 seconds left to give her team a little cushion – 5 points, 58-53. Flowers had missed her five previous attempts from the charity line in the fourth quarter.
The Knights struggled mightily to shoot the basketball. Coach Craig DeVault’s charges shot just 33.3% from the field in the game (20-60) including an anemic 6-28 (21.4%) from beyond the three-point arc. The 28 attempts are a new Class A record. Tecumseh (21-8) also didn’t shoot well. In addition to their FT’s, the Lady Braves were 24-59 from the field, including 2-10 from deep. The teams combined to misfire on 75 of the 119 shots they took. Tecumseh outrebounded the all-guard Lady Knight team 47-38.

Tecumseh sophomore Jenna Donohoo stepped onto the statewide stage Saturday morning. The 5-9 forward averaged 12.4 points a game coming in but exploded for 29 points in this game. On a day when almost everyone else on both teams were firing blanks, Donohoo shot 60% from the field (10-22) and hit five of her eight FT attempts. She added seven offensive rebounds and 13 total and thoroughly dominated the paint.

Central Catholic (24-5) could never find an offensive rhythm. Senior guard Karsyn Cherry (a soccer standout signed with Louisville) scored her 1000th career point a few weeks ago. She picked up two quick fouls and finished the game 1-10 from the field and two points in 22 minutes. Cherry did have 10 rebounds and four assists. Knights leading scorer – junior Tori Thompson – had 6 points (eight and a half below her average). Senior Caitlin Dineen and junior Kendal Rider had 14 each. Freshman Carley Barrett led the Knights with 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting from the field and 5 of 7 from the line. She added four rebounds, four steals, and three assists to a solid stat line for the game.
